That's a bit extreme. He's not that bad, plus watch a major league game. The corner outfielders are there to hit. They get hidden in the OF. (Some are down right laughable out there)

Not trying to be combative, but I love listening to the reasoning for leaving this year, i.e., he's got a very slim chance for a successful pro career so he should quit college early. That is some seriously funny stuff.

You make a good argument, but he has a strong possibility of having a good pro career and he will have a better career if he gets in the minor leagues as a junior as opposed to an old man senior

If it's what most of you say then he should come back. Finish school and maybe have a great year next year. He's not going to sell out

You say that as if going pro after your junior year is somehow a reprehensible act. There is no shame in taking the money someone is offering you to pay pro sports even though you have college eligibility remaining.

Sure there isnt anything wrong with it. The problem is Blake Dean is not going to get life changing $'s to leave college. He is a DH with avg #'s this year. Tons of guys out there have better #'s and play a position. He has played maybe a half of our games in left field. He is below avg. speed, and avg. arm. He has a good bat but has shown to be VERY streaky, not consitant. I dont see him being drafted high enough to leave college. He needs to stay and be succesful in college another year, then test the draft and pro ball.

Now that being said...I hope he gets on a roll the next month!!!

If he gets drafted, even if it's really late, would he really want to chance not getting drafted like Ivan Naccarata?

Plus, college seniors who aren't pitchers automatically have a much lower value. Another year like this one and he doesn't sniff the draft next year, but I bet he gets drafted this year.

That doesn't really make much sense. If he's drafted really late, value is a non-issue anyway. Late round picks don't have any leverage either.

I don't his draft position would be affected by the fact that he's a senior.

Maybe he will get his shot at first, but he doesn't have the power to be a MLB 1bman traditionally. Plus, he'll be competing with aging veterans.

Kotchman for the Braves certainly is not a slugger, not too many Pujols playing 1b. Kotchman hit a whopping 14 HR's in 143 games last year. How much worse could Dean be over a full season. The glove, that is a different challenge. Then again, I don't see any current LSU position players being MLB stalwarts of the future, but I sure do like Schimpf's bat speed for a smaller guy.

If you don't make it in MLB, then there is a lot of value in having a college degree. My view is that if you aren't going to be drafted in the first 5-6 rounds, then your long-term financial future is better served by getting the degree.

he's essentially a 2 tool player at best, albeit arguably the 2 most important tools for hitters. he cant play defense. he cant run. he cant throw. these things wont change. he's gone if he's drafted in even remotely high.

If we didn't have a bunch of really good fielding outfielders, Dean would start in left or right. GM is right, MLB teams start outfielders that can hit the ball. With the exception of CF, sometimes. A great hitter will be put in left or right field where they will be much less involved in the game than other positions....There are countless examples in MLB where guys are being hidden in the outfield for their bat.

There is 1 major flaw he has that he has to correct in order to go to the big leagues and that is he can not hit lefties. That means he will only be situational player at best. If he can correct this 1 flaw it will help him but, here in college is one thing the majors is another. College has metal bats and the majors has wood and that makes a big difference just ask all the great hitters in college before him that did not make it. Hope he can but he has a ton of work to do in order to make it to the next level.

False. According to the media guide (pg 103), Dean batted .360 against lefties vs .350 against righties in 2008. Can't find those stats for this year, but I bet the difference isn't as much as you think.

Secondly, those who continue to talk about lefties not hitting lefties must not watch much MLB. It's pretty common at that level, too.

most of the time part of the contract stipulates that the MLB organization will pay for the player's remaining education. That means the pro teams actually pay more for them to go to school than the school themselves usually pay, because so few players are ever on full scholarships.

Have you seen Deans errors there are "0". Ya'll show how much you know by not realizing the speed in our outfield and Dean being a team player. I haven't seen Dean get burned ,Speed is overrated in college but in Pro ball if you can hit and move 6 feet in either direction you can play outfield. We have the most depth of any team in college baseball and you should be "PROUD" instead of being critical and undermining.
