Likely just him picking people out to help him.

You don't think he revived Locke by touching him after he fell out of the window?

Each of chosen if you will seemingly had potential for improvement. The touching simply signified their selection.
I really enjoy the LOST threads on this board. I agree with many of the religious overtones suggested by various posters. I look forward to the upcoming season.

I definitely do. In fact it appeared that Locke was dead and Jacob seemingly brought him back to life. Locke was unique in this regard.
I see Locke as a Job-like character going through the ultimate test of faith. Considering the Biblical parallels, it's hardly surprising that the anti-Jacob used Locke's body as the loophole to get to Jacob. But if there is a reset then perhaps Benjamin (child of pain) will have another chance :)

Didn't he actually say he watched them all die. If so, they likely aren't dead yet.

I hope we get to learn more about Richard. It seems like he will have a bigger role in the next season.

The religious overtones are almost too obvious to be correct. Also, if Jacob truly was God or Christ, I find it highly unlikely that he would be hanging out in a statue erected in honor of a false God. If this ends up being the way things unfold, the writers made a major mistake.

yeah i'll be upset too if the bomb was the reason for the incident.

I guess it depends on how you translate "correct" relative to LOST. I don't think Jacob (LOST) represents either God or Christ but he might well be considered a servant of God/good as depicted in the Bible. Benjamin, often translated in Hebrew as "son of my pain" LINK was the son of Rachael who died during child birth and of course Ben's Mom in LOST died during his birth so this can hardly be a coincidence on the part of the writers. Also, Benjamin deceived his father, Isaac, to gain his old brother Esau's blessing. Ben in LOST is definitely the ultimate deceiver so I think it's safe to say that is another correlation.
However, I agree with with some have said in that I doubt that the final season will reveal any specific religious parallels. I think it will boil down to a historic good vs evil theme explained in a more scientific unknowns/mysterious setting which is the LOST island or possibly a large-scale science experiment.
There will no doubt be some sort of surprise ending that has probably already been guessed by one of the thousands of LOST bloggers out there :) Considering the references to ancient Egypt and the fact that many have suggested that the Egyptians were influenced by extraterestrials, I would not be surprised learn that the island is some sort of experiment to determine the worthiness of human-kind or something like that.

Also, did anyone read Doc Jensen's recap? He made some arguments that put an interesting "what if Jacob is really the bad one" spin on things. I'll try to go get some highlights.

What makes you think that the statue is of a false god?
Why does Jacob have to be the "God" we all associate with "God" today?
Why couldn't Jacob be an Egyptian god?

what if Jacob is really the bad one
quote:
Because despite his sensitive, soothing demeanor, I find myself nagged by the prospect that Jacob could be playing with the dark pieces in this cosmic game. The final moments of the opening sequence may have offered a clue that Jacob is more charismatic Lucifer Morningstar than feel-good sexy Jesus. As Loophole McNameless walked away, head full of hate and schemes, the camera tilted up and we got a full-scale profile shot of the Statue, which was still intact in the 19th century. The mug on the edifice sure didn't look like a jackal to me, thus ruling out the Egyptian God Anubis, protector of the dead. No, that face looked like a crocodile, which gets you Sobek, a morally ambiguous dark god who oversees dark waters and preys on sinful souls in the afterlife. (Very Smokey.) Even worse, Set, the Egyptian god of chaos and evil, was a shapeshifter who often morphed into crocodiles and hippos (another candidate for Four Toed's face) in his clashes with archenemy Horus. Set was linked to infertility (seems Horus once ripped off Set's testicles) (serious!) (and ouch!) and was partial to fish and lettuce. Hey...didn't we see Jacob munching on a filet-o-fish lettuce wrap last night? And aren't devilish gods all for the concept of choice and free will?
If these mythological readings are correct, then we must wonder: What's a seemingly nice guy like Jacob doing on an Island like this? And why the hell is he living in a statue like that? A Christ-like figure dwelling within a statue that's a monument to evil makes for a nifty metaphor for redemption. But it could mean Jacob is the devil. Time will tell.

Following the funeral for his swindled, murder-suicide parents, James Ford, age 8, begins writing the “Dear Sawyer” letter that will define his adult identity and drive him to vengeance — but then his pen runs out of ink.
WHAT JACOB DID: He gave James a pen and told him to keep it.
I get the feeling that Jensen actually thinks that Jabob is a good guy, but I found these little tidbits very interesting and am curious to see if they mean anything.
Doc Jensen rocks ... just FYI

I have always thought that this was a final good/evil battle but that it was being played out by pawns representing each side to determine the fate of humanity. I don't think that any of the chars are the show are "God" or "Satan" or whomever, just they may be each of these sides champions.

If Jacob represents the God of the Bible, as some have suggested, then the statue is a false God because according to the Bible, there is only one true God.
I'm the one who said I don't think Jacob is God, so not sure why you're asking me this. I find it more plausible that Jacob and the other guy are perhaps alien life forms, which ties in better with the references to ancient Egypt.

You need to reread the Old Testament.
Isaac had twin sons, Esau and Jacob.
Jacob's youngest son was Benjamin.

I got the nagging feeling Jacob might be evil for a second also.
But the beginning dialog between him and black and his words to Ben show otherwise.
Maybe there is a little good and bad in both of them. Much like the yin/yang symbol.
