This is really just one question...

Why doesn't LSU claim it's 1908 national championship? It's not because it was too long ago, because Michigan claims and has their championships before 1908 recognized by the NCAA.

LSU did tie Penn that season for #1 in the NCF poll, but that's not the reason why we don't claim it. Because Michigan tied Princeton in the same poll in 1903, but their 1903 title is recognized.

So why doesn't LSU claim 1908?

Cue a bunch of posters bringing up Alabama and Ole Miss for no good reason in ... 3 ... 2 ...

Is that the year where there were allegations (I assume substantiated) of several "professional" players being recruited from the north?

ETA: Here is a good write-up from Peter Finney.

P.S. I can see why it would be a sore spot for Doc Fenton.

Have you contacted LSU's athletic department to inquire about this magnificent issue?

We don't claim it because we don't want to be another Alabama...

I prefer claiming the titles that LSU has won in the modern era that is college football.

Although I do feel that LSU should acknowledge the 1908 Championship team. The players that earned that title deserve it.

Why? Haven't we been over this subject a million times? As we hear from our local LSU historian, tigger, all the time, the allegations were probably not substantiated (at least not for 1908, but maybe for 1907), but LSU did not end up officially claiming the title, most likely because (EDIT: some organizations unofficially) awarded Auburn the Southern Championship by default (even though LSU beat Auburn). Informally, many people at LSU still considered the season a national championship season, but after the 1958 season, only one official championship was claimed by the school. Go figure.

EDIT: Dave Wilson's listing of SIAA and SoCo champs before the SEC was formed --> LINK & LINK. Note that the first SoCo season was in 1922.

That's always puzzled me too. History: My dad, who graduated L.S.U. in 1925 told me in the 1940's and 50's that L.S.U. had won the national football championship in 1908. Then after the 1958 championship he used to say L.S.U. won the championship every 50 years. Of course, he was not in college or even reading in 1908. this is just oral history. I wish someone could research the details and give us the facts.
With all the bogus championships claimed by Alabama and Ole Miss I think we should claim the old ones if they are factual, not bogus. It is a diservice to LSU's history if we do not.

I'm not the best with football history, but I take it that TDs only counted for 5 back then. Anyone know for sure about this and can enlighten me?

Fenton, who passed for two touchdowns in the 10-2 victory at Auburn, was responsible for the only points Auburn yielded during the '08 season.

For the same reason we don't claim '35, '36, and '62.

No, not at all. We don't claim those 3 because we didn't deserve them. Those weren't titles from polls the NCAA recognizes. However, 1908 was. 1908 is the only unclaimed national title that LSU could claim and have it seem credible.
