Wendell Davis honored at the Gator Bowl

I went to the game and in the first half during a timeout he went out onto the field and was introduced to the crowd as a new inductee into the Gator Bowl hall of fame. to an all-time Tiger great. It was cool to be there to see that.
Also, when the P.A. announcer ran down his accomplishments "in the 1987 Gator Bowl against South Carolina" Davis got a loud cheer from the Clemson contingent. Pretty funny.

Did he still walk with a limp?

Davis and Hodson had a monster Gator Bowl...torched that "Black Death" defense like nobody's bidness.
Archer should've walked away from football after that game, because that was the high point of his career.

Never thought I'd see myself defending Mike Archer, but we did win the SEC the following year.

A championship shared with Auburn, no Sugar Bowl and a Hall of Fame Bowl thumping by Syracuse.
Syracuse.
Syracuse.

Well we beat Auburn to but sucked out of conference in '88 which kept us out of the Sugar Bowl. We still had the technical conference title tiebreaker.
And Syracuse used to be good. So there's no need to emphasize them.
There's no need to hate on Archer, he's been gone almost 20 years. And he wasn't the worst to come through here.

Forgive me, but Syracuse was a very good team the year before. I think their QB finished in the top two or three in the Heisman voting. But the 1988 Syracuse team wasn't all that.
And my intent was not to hate on Archer...just pointing out something with the benefit of hindsight. It's not his fault for taking the job.

Remember, LSU's 1988 OOC schedule included Texas A&M, Ohio State and Miami, all legit top 15 teams at the time. Also, the Tigers' win against Auburn that year likely cost Auburn a shot at the NC.
As far as Wendell's concerned, I thought that I'd read somewhere that his wife is an attorney. Wasn't he involved in a lawsuit over his career ending injury and did anything ever come of that?

i just remember him having a bad leg injury with the chicago bears.

I saw a piece on him about five years ago. He owns several barber shops in Chicago (or owned at the time) that hold quite a bit of his college and pro paraphanalia.

i think wendell blew out both of his knees on one play. they got caught under the seem in the turf at philly i think. archer blew wndell davis' freshman year on eight plays, he later admitted he wished he hadn't done it.

One of my favorite Tigers. Would have had a great pro career if not for blowing out both knees on the same play. Congrats Wendell and

You are correct. That turf was so horrible. I remember watching the highlights and was sad for Davis. Same place that claimed Michael Irvin's career too.

Sharpe got all the media attention going into that game but Davis was the better receiver that day.

We officially were "co-champs" even though we beat Auburn "head-to-head" in the Earthquake Game. With that being said, though, 1988 was really a pretty miserable season, and was a harbinger of things to come.
