Was I in the wrong here? Is a counter not where you put money?

So, working today. Stop at a store in the hood. Bring my tumbler in, find an ice machine. Fill my tumbler.
Look for unsweet tea, they don't have it. Whatever, I have water in truck.
Go up to the counter (all behind plexiglass and full of typical hood habibi store shite).
Older...I think Indian lady, maybe middle eastern. Show her the ice
She tells me "fifty cent".
So I reach into my pocket and pull out two quarters, put my hand on the counter and set the coins down. One kind of spolls (spins and rolls) a little. You know the sound. She reaches out and takes them and I turn to leave.
Almost out the door, some stank booty, weave-headed hoe, says loudly to the clerk "he jus threw it down on da table."
I turn around and said "it's a COUNTER, where you COUNT money."
She said some gooniegoo insult as my back as I walked out and I wasn't in the mood to deal with some worthless boogerwolf nonsense.
But it pissed me off.
TL;DR
Is it wrong to put money on the counter? Why would it be an issue? It's not like the lady had her hand out to me.
I'll shut up and listen.

Some people see it as disrespectful if you don’t hand it to them
Those are typically the people that are miserable & unhappy with everyone & everything

But the one with the problem wasn't the clerk, as far as I could tell.

Putting your money on the counter for the cashier to pick up is unacceptable for anyone between the ages of 8 and 82. Who does that shite?

I had some kid give me the "got to put the money in my hand or its disrespect" bullshite on me.
Next time I came in, he put my change on the counter. I did what he did - held my hand out waiting.
He said "oh, yea, man." We've gotten along fine since then.

Gotta let the overhead cameras see what’s up.

It's a little rude but assuming you're a white guy doing this in Baton Rouge the black lady that called you out was already angry at you for being there or just plain existing.

Step aside Drake/Kendrick Lamar. We got a new beef.

You should have tossed the quarters on the floor behind her.

You've never had a cashier put your money on the counter and push it to you?
You've never counted your money on the Counter and pushed it to them?

You weren't wrong to put money down but are wrong to call her racial slurs.

Your response should have been, "You would know that sound, uh?"

Sometimes I lay it down, sometimes I hand it. Maybe because you dropped it and it spun around it looked like you were throwing it at her?
