They need to either move the base into foul territory or change the running lane to fair territory. It makes no sense that the direct path from home plate to the 1st base bag is not considered the running lane.

I mean.. isn’t that kind of the whole point of doing something like this?

I don’t love it but I think it makes more sense than moving the entire base or running lane.

When an initial play is being made on the batter-runner at first base, the defense must use the white section of the double base and the batter-runner must use the colored base except in the case of a dropped third strike.

If there is a play on the batter-runner and the batter-runner touches only the white portion of the double base and the defense appeals prior to the batter-runner returning to first base, it is treated the same as missing the base. Penalty: Batter-runner is out.

Hold up…is this saying that if the runner beats the throw to the bag on a routine grounder but only touches the white base then he can be ruled out?

Is this stupid shite in the name of player safety? They don’t want runners stepping on the same base that the 1st baseman has his foot on?

If this is in the name of reducing injuries from hitters trying to beat out the throw to 1st why even use another base? Chalk an outline next to the existing base and you get to the same place but now with far fewer ankle injuries. If they're so concerned make the play at 1st just a sprint, don't go halfway

I get the double base thing in youth baseball and softball as collisions happen more frequently (someone throws to the 1B's left and pulls him into the baseline and wham), but at college and up they're not at all common. A problem's being fixed that doesn't really exist

A double base's existence also inherently further orients runners' bodies away from the field and towards the dugout, meaning further distance to run. In a bang bang play that extra step or two wide instead of straight up the line will mean the difference between safe and out

Soft.

This younger generation is just different. Now it's spilling over to baseball. The actual rules of baseball have to change bc someone might get hurt running to first base.

Lol.

In other words, the colored base only exists for when you’re running straight through on a single, trying to beat a throw to first.

So what happens when you run through the green base and something happens and you go to second. Do you have to stay at first because you ran through the green base. Just stupid

The whole idea is stupid but if you are going to do it this is the way. Needs to be 2 separate and different color bases for judging foul or fair ball.

Should probably sticky this thread to save us having to see 1000 threads during the game asking about this stupid crap

This is just the SEC saying that it was runners interference.

Just plain foolish.

Surprised it isn't a rainbow color.

No, because it clearly says you can touch either base when you’re going around to second.

Again y’all are making it out to be more complex than it is. I think it looks janky but it’s not that complicated.

I do agree with others that it would make more sense to simply make the base wider, though.

The reasoning for the two bags is that the first baseman can only use the white bag and it is also used to judge fair/foul.

I get that but can they not just put a line down the middle?

They had all season to implement this unnecessary change. You don't change something when the postseason starts with ncaa tournament bids on the line.
