Bo Jackson is an anomaly.

Just go watch a college football game from back then and watch one from now. The size of the linemen is the biggest difference by a mile. Here's an example:

In 1971, Nebraska had what was at the time, probably the best college football team ever. Their defense was anchored by their two defensive tackles, Larry Jacobson and Rich Glover, who would go on to win the 1971 and 1972 Outland Trophies. Jacobson and Glover were about 240 pounds each and were considered giants.

50 years later, in 2021, Georgia won the national title with a defense with two star defensive tackles, Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter. Davis and Carter played college ball at about 360 and 300 pounds.

Easily. They're much stronger and more skilled.

We're talking NBA here? This is absolutely true.

Especially in the 90s and 00s when expansion really screwed up the average talent of each team up and the league had a ton of scrubs.

America still doesn't produce nearly enough for the league, which is why such a high % of the league (including the very top) are foreign-born.

I'd LOVE to see Marino with the current offense rules and modern WRs. He was so far ahead of the game, coaches didn't try to emulate they knew their QB could never.

Bird got by on intelligence and skill so I have no doubt he could play today. His issue would be defense. He might have to play the 5

Marino is one of those guys who seems to be incredible for his era but might not translate. The game may be too complex for him today. He is not the brightest bulb. He wrecked it in a far less complex era.

Also, for the Boomers who want to talk about carrying/traveling, Shammgod played in the late 90s when Jordan was doing his 2nd 3-peat

*ETA: he also taught Kobe how to dribble

I've said for 10 years I'd love to see Curry play back in the 80s. The Warriors hit something like 26 3's last night.

In the 80s after Curry hit 3 3's the next time he came in the lane a forward would hit him so hard he couldn't see straight to shoot another 3.

I don't think anyone would disagree. A mobile rim protector like Hakeem would be amazing today.

I imagine Anthony Mason jogging back on defense and some little shite PG decides to get right in front of him at half court and stop to try and draw a foul on Mason running up his back, and Mason just levels his arse and falls on top of him with all his body weight, and then laughs as he walks away as the little shite lays there in pain.

We’d then have a 20 minute stoppage in the game for a review, Mason confused the whole time as he doesn’t even think it’s a foul on him, and after two separate commercial breaks the officials confirm 3 guys are ejected along with Mason and Mason’s head explodes in confusion as to what the frick just happened and why he was ejected.

Guys from the 80s and 90s weren’t babies
modern football teams would physically maul teams from the 80s

The average offensive lineman in 1985 was 272 pounds. The avarage defensive line today goes

Once again, the top players would be fine, but the average of the 80s gets crushed by the average today is 302 lbs

The average defensive end now is 283 pounds. That’s bigger than the average offensive guard in the 80s

So was 80s basketball just a bunch of games that ended 24-20 with guys who couldn’t see straight?

No but anytime a guy got hot to get him unhot you’d rough him up a bit. Definitely wouldn’t let him stand there with faux defense and shoot another 20 3s.

You’ve seen the Bird videos with guys pulling him to the ground on a layup? Where’s the video of that happening to Curry?
