For some of yall that don't know, Louisiana implemented Mississippi's reading curriculum that teaches the original phonics based reading curriculum.

In just a couple of years, the state already has the nation's highest reading growth from year to year.

I knew I should have gotten in early on the Hooked on Phonics stock.

I have a 1st grader, so I imagine she is in the midst of this. I am impressed with how well she can read. I don't remember learning to read as early as she has.

I didn't see phonics mentioned in the article. Assuming you are correct and I have no basis to say you aren't being I'm ignorant on the subject, what was the process that was in place beforehand?

I learned how to read using phonics in the early 70s. I was a great reader at an early age.

These people just overthink things and get away from tried-and-true methods.

Seems they took something that MS did and worked well.

I don't believe that.

Jokes on us, exposre to reading should not be first approached in the classroom, it should be taught at home.

My girlfriend teaches ELA to 3rd graders in Abbeville; 6/36 students are reading at a 3rd grade level. 10 cannot read at all.

They’ve overcomplicated learning for these kids. Studying & doing homework each night with my 3rd grader has made me realize that.

Say what you will about her bid for Governor, but Sharon Hewitt is to thank for this. She brought this bill and the math bill through the legislature.

Why would they have even stopped teaching phonics? That's how I learned to read and was taught that in elementary school for several grades. It was actually a course that was taught. I wanna say it was Reading/Phonics.

Wish the article gave some context and not just the money talks.

Without any real details on the 'what' in the article, I can only assume it is not talking about 'dibels', as that thing is utter trash. The 'dibels' crap they have going now to measure students should have stayed in Oregon. This assessment is done on the computer with a teacher on a tablet where students are to read and scroll as fast as they can while the teacher marks it as accurate or not (teacher's choice on allowing them to continue on an inaccurate word or stay on it until it is correct). Sounds simple enough until you see your school system's consensus strongest readers barely met their words per minute mark in this 'accessment' yet the kids who's reading sounds like an 80s rap solo are 'exceling'...

The worst of it is the new overall ciriculum Louisiana is recommending to schools from 3rd-8th grade as of this year, ie. 'Bayou Bridges' - a leftist trashcan developed by a non-profit cesspool in Virgina iirc. Per thier site:

LINK /

quote:

Excellence and Equity in Education
...
shrink the fairness gap between the academic achievement of American students living in poverty and that of their economically advantaged peers

You can download the ciriculuum for free from their site or the bayou bridges site itself. Some highlights are:

1. Learn the pilliars of Islam and all about the life of Muhammed.
2. Learn about the Ghani tribe that had no impact on anyone, anywhere but there.
3. Praise abound for big government efforts.

And the list goes on. Go figure, as of the start of this year, Louisiana is the only state dumb enough to recommend it and many parishes take the CYA approach of 'state recommended == we adopt it' bull. Spoke with senators and confirmed that it was blindly stamped and approved and no one associated with BESE or the chair cares enough to actually do anything about it.

How pathetic is public education in Louisiana that we had to copy Mississippi?

Congrats, I guess.

1970's education here. I was so good at spelling bees in class it got to the point I would misspell words on purpose just so I could sit and chill

My son has a weekly phonograms test (1st Grade). I was shocked how well he has progressed this year with this reading.
