Why are graduating seniors required to check this drop off of the to do list?

I filled out a form that stated that I was declining to fill out the FAFSA. This is a real thing, but you have to insist that you know what you are giving up.

Also, keep in mind that a student can fill out a FAFSA form at any time during the school year if you just want a federal loan. If you change your mind, that is always available.

Because your friends in the LA Legislature thought it would encourage more kids to go to college.

Because they thought the problems in our state can be solved by having even more marginal students go to school, get grants, then drop out after two semesters

While Texas and other industry growing states are trying to encourage more kids to go to trade school or community college, at least to start their post-high school career, we’re still stuck on a mentality of we must encourage every kid that they should pursue a 4 year university degree. We even have legislators filing bills to lower TOPS qualification standards.

Especially since the FAFSA automatically pulls your info from your tax return.

I’d love to see a study done to measure what percentage of TOPS students actually stay in Louisiana after they graduate. A lot of them go straight to Texas after getting their degree.

Bingo can you not claim the child and let them apply on their financials and game the system ?

I hate to break it to you but if you file taxes the federal government already knows how much money you make

You literally have to connect your online IRS account to your application.

You can if your kid is an emancipated minor, married, or has a child of their own. I’m not sure any of those are preferable.

My 17 year old hit me with this the night before he claimed it was due. To make it worse, I got remarried last may, so the new wife had to get involved. Fortunately, she had done it before.

It is what the schools use in part to qualify you for scholarships including third-party scholarships and determine which, if any, loan programs you may qualify for.

But check with the school, you may be able to forgo that if you plan on paying cash or getting private loans outside of any federal or state-qualified systems. .

The FAFSA is not required. If you know you won't be getting any need-based aid, you don't have to do it.

How else would the communist academia know how to discriminate against wealthy productive families to subsidize DEI initiatives?

FAFSA is a requirement for the FWS (Federal Work Study) program.

And you can qualify for FWS with an income above that required for grants and other income based awards.

Work Study, especially when linked to a professor or specific college, is a good tool for references and internships. My kid parlayed his work study (grading papers/test proctor) into an internship. Plus he made some pocket money.

It is BS....

I did it for all my kids before the applied for college. It was always a waste of time and a joke. I always got back the $5600 a year in Stafford loans crap.

I never did it after that. I always thought it was an hour of my time I would never get back. I was right.
