Haiti’s problems are complex but a main one is a history of isolationism and not wanting help from the evil “Yankees.”
Whereas the Dominican was much more receptive and let us help build decent roads, etc.
There have been periods of exceptions to both, of course.

There has been a decided lack of outside help because of that isolationism.
And by that, I mean “killing every white person in Haiti regardless of whether they supported the rebellion or not.”

Have been to Haiti a couple of times and it’s remarkable the difference between Port au Prince and the rest of the country. Even Cap Hatien, a fairly big city on the north coast, is pretty calm. You could fly into Cap today and feel pretty safe traveling around the rest of the country. Parts of which are beautiful with great people, as an aside. Just avoid PaP (Cap’n Obvious)
“Other than that Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?”

Good thing the Clinton Initiative saved that country right
Notice literally every country HRC has ever "helped" ends up worse than dog shite?

If there was any way to clean house there and install a legitimate government, it could be a fantastic place to visit.
Gorgeous beaches and mountains.
Agriculturally viable.
Good location in the Caribbean for tourists.
As it stands though, it’s a cesspool of crime and corruption.

Just the people who have actually been there. But you've never been farther than Gulf Shores have you?

The demise of Haiti as a tourist destination started in the 80s with the spread of HIV. It had been a hot spot for NYC gays who knew they could pay young Haitian boys for sex. Then when AIDS was discovered everyone stopped going there due to the infection spread.
Since tourism was their major source of income the whole place went to hell. They even lost the contract to make baseballs.

Let’s not pretend you’ve ever been to DR for any other reason other than you prefer to travel on a floating trailer park or that you stayed at one of those isolated 2star resorts because you couldn’t afford Cancun.

I’ve been to Haiti a few times. Outside of PaP, it wasn’t bad a decade ago. Astonishingly poor. The last time I was there was 11 years ago. My dad was in his last days of a battle with pancreatic cancer. A pastor there prayed with me. I couldn’t understand a lot of what he was saying, because I speak next to no Creole, but it was special to me. I’d like to see him again someday and thank him.
It makes me sad that I probably won’t have that opportunity to do so.

Talk about projection.
Mid-90s to early 00s I worked as as a surveyor for golf course developments. I worked all over the Caribbean and Central America.
