I only ever got a speeding ticket. Never caused an accident with the two vehicles that my parents had let me drive. Not every teen is an accident prone driver.

Car payments are awful right now. I have heard of some parents just straight up not putting their kids on the policy and pray they don't wreck. Insurance will still cover things at the end.
Do not overthink cars. They are built so that you can get from A to B to C and back to A. It just needs to help you travel. Anything else is extra. If you want extra, sure, add it on but it will not change what the car will do for you 99% of the time. You can teach your kids how to properly maintain your car. Show them that this is the only car they get and if something happens to it, they'll need to figure it out.

That's always been my original plan. I may end up doing that. Maybe a manual transmission accord or similar.

Yeah, I know not everyone will get that but it's a special vehicle to me. Installed a nice TRD Pro suspension on it myself, has some badass offroad tires, mechanically been extremely well maintained, etc. It still looks amazing overall. We've been everywhere in it as a family, from driving on the beach, to camping, to the mountains, and countless road trips in between. It's been through some shite but has never let us down. It's basically a family member. I didn't buy it to sell after 100k miles- the plan was to keep it for a very long time.

My parents bought me a CPO 4Runner my senior year of HS. I'm 30 now and one of the dumbest things I did was sell that car. I wish I still had it.

First and foremost I would get my kids a safe car. Teenagers are notoriously bad drivers so the likelihood of a wreck is greater. Do you want them to be alive or do you want to say you made a good financial decision.
If you can easily afford it as you claim, put them in a car they will walk away from if they are in a wreck.

Yeah definitely agree here. I think the 4Runner would accomplish that and if that's how it's life ended (saving my kids life), I wouldn't be upset.
I do have some hesitation over buying a smaller car because of that.

definitely keep it, you'll always regret it if you don't. Buddy of mine handed down his 1st gen Tundra to his daughter and she takes good care of it. My wife drives an 09 T4R, last year of the V8 and we'll keep it forever.

Seems like the 4Runner would be a pretty safe car. My understanding is that a lot of it comes down to weight and the person with the heavier car tends to win.
No way I would put my kids in a small go cart type car with all the massive suvs around. Give them a fighting chance!

I never proposed selling it. It was either a) pass it down to my kids or b) keep it.
