The low temps won’t kill them. It will delay the development of the young crawfish which are already 2 months behind normal levels. LSU thinks we are looking at around April 1 if weather warms up for the crawfish to start coming in. A lot a fields south of I10 will never come in because they couldn’t flood them due to salt water intrusion. Prime rice planting time is March 1 thru April 15. All those fields that are normally planted to rice won’t be harvested for crawfish either.

With crawfish forecasted not picking up til April, this will be one of the strangest Lents on record with low supply.

A year without boiled crawfish wont kill us (consumers).

I stocked up on tail meat at $9.99 a lb.

A year without crawfish will have lasting effects for future years from the farmer to the wholesaler to the restaurants to the consumer

I don't need crawfish that bad. I'll let the baws that need to throw the big family boils have em this year.

I’d rather shrimp anyway.I used to love crawfish and would eat them good any times a season.2-3 years ago I quit caring about them except for etouffe or fried tails.

Meh. So is that what is happening this year?

No there’s still not enough supply even if we kept all the crawfish in Louisiana right now. I bet there’s not 500 sacks daily being caught right now in Louisiana

What's the latest on how the spillway forecast is looking? Or is it too soon to know much about that?

This isn’t just a live and boiled supply problem. Less supply also means more crawfish regardless of size will be boiled or sold live which means less tail meat available.

The future is in peril because of the intrusion of apple snails. If a way to control them isn’t found soon they will devastate the entire industry starting in the swamps then moving to the fields

I don’t know much about the way the spillway operates, but just from the looks of the spillway from passing by, the water is still low it’s going to take a lot of more water until they start operating. Going to need some snowmelt that’s a ways off.

The article is about the entirety of the 2024 crawfish season. I still stand by my statement that this crawfish season they would have more than enough for Louisiana if they didn’t prefer to export out of state.

In fact, i bet this year that it will be easier to get them out of state because they will price “normal” Louisianans out of the market by paying an extra $2+ a lb.

Yes to a certain extent. The surface water ponds that get water from bayous are getting more and more apple snails. The farms that are on deep wells haven’t had any cases of apple snails yet.

Had an ol boy in Thibodaux selling live sacks for $12.99/lb. His comment was sorry, don't have a lot of supply, so I have to sell them at boiled prices. WTF. Who's buying a $450-500 sack of crawfish? But I bet he sold them within an hour...

Yeah it’s called a free market. The crawfish industry won’t close the state borders down, if Texas wants to buy crawfish more power to them. But if you look around Texas there isn’t hardly any places with crawfish just like Louisiana. For the next month that won’t be changing either. And no even if we kept all the crawfish in Louisiana this season I still don’t think we meet the demand because I think we will have a fraction of the normal supply.

Live crawfish shouldn’t be sold over $9.50lb imo. Farmers are getting $8.00lb, if they are purging them I can see marking the price up a bit plus transportation.

Pretty much exactly what my buddy who has about 600 acres of crawfish ponds around Welsh been saying - everything is 2.5 to 3 months behind due to the drought. He would normally be catching 1200 -1500 lbs a day, right now he's lucky to get 150 lbs. Even at the exorbitant prices, he is making very little profit after expenses are factored in. He also is starting to see some apple snails but is also seeing and hearing limpkins- and those birds will wipe out snails quickly.

This is the best time for crawfish. I know a few crawfisherman who don't start going out until late February, early March.
