That’s impressive numbers hopefully that’s a sign that things will come around

commercialization has made it a FUBAR
Seems to be the case with everything that is commercialized. One could argue NIL is the culmination of college football being commercialized. It certainly has contributed mightily to the ruination of the greatest sport ever.

How much does the motherland basin produce every year? I doubt it’s more than pond raised.
In 2020, 10 million lbs from the Basin vs 170 million pounds from ponds - Source: Louisiana Ag Summary.
There is more current information but it’s not online yet, but the Basin has supplied less 10% of the state’s crawfish crop for some years now.

That’s what I figured. It’s not even close pond crawfish dictates everything. Even if the basin has a normal year which they won’t, that’s a fraction of the crawfish market.

But...but...but...the experts here told me that it's the greedy farmers causing the increased prices we see??? Same ole shite every year right??? Right????
You mean to tell me that we could have much lower crawfish prices if all the farms went out of business like some here would be happy to see??? Removing about 94% of crawfish produced annually in this state from the market would help drop prices??? Right????
Please sir, tell me it is not this easy to fix everything where crawfish are dirt cheap again???

The freeze hurts the crawfish for about a week. They basically just stay still until the water warms up. That usually takes about a week. The real problem for the crawfish industry is the drought. Which most of us all realize.
The cold is taking a bad situation and preventing a quick rebound.
But the major issue is the drought

I got a bad feeling here.
Many of these crawfish farmers are going to be in dire financial straits very soon.
In comes corporate / private equity money, who will buy out the farms very cheaply, then they can wait around for the industry to recover. If it takes a year or two, no worries.
Then, boom, Jack up prives and profit.

if people would stop glorifying this product then the prices would immediately go down to where they belong.
Kind of like how cigarette prices plummeted since tv and magazine ads quit "glorifying" smoking right? Although crawfish is a staple locally it's also considered a luxury product by many, including myself.
Unfortunately it doesn't work the way you think it does and supply, demand and pricing vary widely from season to season due to things out of the farmers' control. Things like weather, inflation, timing of high demand events, dealing with issues while attempting to raise wild animals to meet market demands etc. All concepts apparently that weak minds cannot understand.
It's simple enough...if you can afford them and want to pay for it, buy them. If not eat your shrimp, fried fish, steaks, lobster, caviar etc. Smokers still pay an arm and a leg for cigarettes today because they want them. Some folks will eat crawfish regardless of price volatility.
And if by "go down to where they belong" you mean that they'd become dirt cheap where producers couldn't make money. Then bankrupting farms and removing crawfish from the market would have the exact opposite effect from what you and the other morons here suggest.

Where does the price belong?
What's the breakeven price on an acre of avg crawfish production?
I doubt you come back and answer these questions

I'll just do what I have done for over fifty years and go and catch my own, f* ck "crawfish farmers" . Sounds like a made up title anyway.

Anyone paying such ridiculous prices for crawfish is nuts anyway. It sucks commodities such as crawfish and king cakes enjoyed by Louisiana folks for years has become a shipping commodity and a makes it difficult even for us to enjoy. Can’t even pre order king cakes for pick up these days in some places. Too busy making shipping cakes.

We joke about it a lot, but I have been hearing the same from months from people that know.
They knew we were fricked many months ago. The drought was brutal

Crawfish "season" was in April and May
Addicts have to have them in January and February now.
I wouldnt give you a nickle a pound for the pond trash they sell these days.

Last the few years we’ve had to get on sack counts after Lent. There was plenty of crawfish to go all over the gulf coast, just because this year we can’t supply Louisiana we can’t just shut down the other states.
