I have no idea why drive-throughs are not a thing anymore. If a driver has nothing to lose, then a 5 or even 20 second penalty does nothing but hurt people behind you.

Max going to cede fastest lap to Hamilton, huh?

Leclerc with the fast lap. Where would Sainz have finished if he were racing?

What's will Danny's excuse be for this race?

That spin was embarrassing.

I still think Horner should go up there to accept the constructor's trophy just as a frick you to everyone.

K-Mag is holding up a line of cars

To me Mags is driver of the race. We got to see some fun defensive tactics lap after lap. What he did to hold off drivers and yet drive slower each lap was brilliant. He chose tough sections to slow everyone down then dumped his full battery down straights.

No idea what a point is worth dollar wise but a lot if they finish ahead of instead of behind someone at end of year.

To be honest, F1 should not assign the time penalties until after the race. That way drivers and teams can’t use it for strategy, not knowing ahead. But Haas and Mags used current rules perfectly

Ricciardo has been done since he entered the McLaren car. Hopefully there is a chance he gets tossed early for Lawson.

The bigger question is what is going on with Hamilton? I did not watch the race so was he bad or did the alternate strategy stick him and Norris in 8th and 9th?

Completely disagree. Penalties should be decided ASAP and told to everyone. I think the better question is what should be done about the penalties in general. I think they are fine but people keep complaining that they are not tough enough.

Hamilton's not checked out, but he's not going to drive a shitty car to the limit at this point.

Also, I can't stand how abruptly ESPN ends their coverage.

I see both sides. What they need go do is decide and place the time penalty in a sealed envelope to be opened after race. Teams then won’t know for sure during race so won't be able to use known penalties as strategy.

If they force a drive through that kills any chances of a good race.

I don’t know the right answer. Most races have more pit stops to take the time penalties.

To me Mags first penalty was iffy but 2nd was justified clearly. Mags was forced right next to wall right before his first penalty so to me it was a wash (both did it but Mags was ahead at start if squeezing).

About the only way they could apply time penalties during the race is announce it and then use electronic method to slow car down to equal 5 seconds (or 10) worth. Announce it will happen on lap x and begins at start of straightaway. That way other cars know where it will start so can avoid.

There's no right answer, but they have to keep striving for fairness.

The problem I have with the current system is illustrated by what we saw today, and it comes down to these two issues:

1. It's really hard to pass in F1. The drivers have said that they might be pacing close to 1 second a lap faster than the guy in front of him, but he still might not be able to pass, depending on the track.

2. If you incur a 5-sec penalty early in the race and there was some way to instantly move you 5 seconds back, you might lose 10 places. If you can wait until your next pit stop 15 laps later, you will lose fewer places as the field has spread out. If you've already done your last pit stop and there's 40 laps to go, then you can change the race from a position you're not even supposed to be in.

I think a reasonable improvement to the rule is that you must pit within 10 laps of incurring a time penalty, unless you're within maybe 15 laps to the end of the race.

I'm not knocking Haas for playing to the rules perfectly. It's great to see a good race day performance under Komatsu.

However, the penalty occurred early in the race and Albon, K-Mag's first victim, was victimized again as he was denied the point that Hulk got.

Edit: Oh, also K-Mag's second penalty was for putting all four wheels off the track passing Yuki. In IndyCar if you make an illegitimate pass, you have to give the position back, and sometimes the driver will give back the position before even being ordered to. F1 should be the same. It's easy, if the victim is still just behind you, you give the position back within a couple of laps. If the guy has fallen further back behind others, only then does a 5-sec penalty apply (but within 10 laps as I suggest above).
