Those of you in Baton Rouge may have seen a TV story about Momma's Feed The Hungry Program in North Baton Rouge, feeding over 400 families for Christmas this year. The report said that Momma could not be there this year. You may remember that 'Momma' is Seabell Thomas, who ran and cooked huge meals of "Mississippi Cooking" at various iterations of the Silver Moon restaurant near LSU over the years. Unpoken in the story was that Momma was diagnosed with Stage 4 Uterine Cancer about 2 weeks ago, and is not doing well at all. By all appearances, she is on the way out and still in her house in North Baton Rouge. If you want to give something for Momma's care, a fund has been set up at Campus Federal Credit Union as the “Mama Seabell Cancer Benefit Account." Other benefits are being organized, but this one is up now.

Just left her house. She took care of us many days in past and she has had a glorious life.

Wish I’d seen this before leaving town, I’d have made the trip to see her. Ate many a lunch in her little apartment off the carport at her house. I remember remarking when she gave me a copy of her cookbook that none of the recipes mentioned lard, she said “sweetie, I cook with love, not lard”. And we both laughed, because her meals were wonderful, but wouldn’t qualify as heart healthy.

Wonderful, sweet lady. Will make sure I get my gang to contribute. Thanks for posting.

Thank you both for posting this. This is a sad development for the God-knows how many of us who experienced her incredible food, and her even-more incredible passion for taking care of her patrons and people in general.

Losing silver moon cafe was losing the lore and character of LSU.
Wish that lady, her fam, and her community peace and love during her final days.
Lady is a saint.

She was always a very sweet lady. I used to eat at the Silver Moon quite often at LSU in the 90s.

She's such a kind and beautiful soul.

She always came around to the table to give us a hug or pinch the chubby among us on the cheek.

I lost my maw maw the summer before college started, she always reminded me of her.

There is no hard count on how many of her 'babies' she fed for free while the Silver Moon was operating. A lot of the homeless in the area would wait some tables and help clean the place for their meals. Momma was a one-woman army for the poor folks.

Next time I'm there, I'll ask and post it here. Be aware that there are several errors in the book. The fried chicken recipe starts with "50 pounds of chicken" when it meant 5 lbs. Stuff like that. Pretty easy to reason through. Recipes aside, her life story in the back is worth the price of the book...

Just went and saw Seabell today. Looks a lot better, voice is strong. She is seeing the oncologist tomorrow (1/2/23) to learn more about her cancer and what treatment they will follow. As for her cookbook.. They do have a few hardbacks left, but no real organized sale effort. If you want one, email me and I will hook you up with her daughter Sonya, who is caring for her and handling all her business. I have a gmail account that begins with robchand 58.

In previous threads about the cookbook, some users said that they ordered the book a long time ago and never received it. I suspect that whoever is / was running the online store, just stopped doing it and forgot about the website. Paypal likely cutoff the site due to complaints of people not getting the books they ordered. I tried ordering it over a year ago and got the same error that you did, unfortunately. I'd love to have the book. Hopefully, some family will step up and start selling it again. I know Mama would probably want to share all these recipes.

Very sorry to learn of Momma's failing health. She was a favorite of BR business people, as well. The coat and tie crowd went for lunch, sat next to whoever was at the table and loved her home cooking, too.

Our prayers and good thoughts are with her and her family for good health and comfort.
