Here is an example of a good coach who did not recruit well. Getting that job at such a young age pretty much killed his prospects at a future HC job. Sucked for him and LSU

Archer coaching Arsnparger's recruits in 1987 gave LSU its first top 5 team since Deitzels last year in 1961. And the only top 5 team between 1961 & 2003.

Coaches who lost one or fewer games in a season with 10 or more games played. Highest poll ranking included

1908 Edgar Wingard 10-0

1946 Bernie Moore 9–1–1 #2

1958 Paul Dietzel 11–0 #1
1961 Paul Dietzel 10–1 #4

1962 Charles McClendon 9–1–1 #7
1969 Charles McClendon 9–1 #7

1987 Mike Archer 10–1–1 #5

2003 Nick Saban 13–1 #1

2011 Les Miles 13–1 #2

2019 Ed Orgeron 15–0 #1

You can support Les Miles all you want but in hindsight you can see how much he wasted and screwed up. Poor evaluator all around.

Mike Archer was close. Took a really good program and wrecked it with the quickness.

Some truth in this especially as it relates to the offense. But as goofy as he was, the guy could evaluate and recruit talent.

By the time Les was fired, all of us were ready for him to go. But you can’t deny his record here. He had LSU competing at a high level for a decade which is something incredibly rare. He didn’t develop some of the talent he brought, but you have to credit him for getting the talent in the door. The man could recruit. It’s unfortunate that he couldn’t get an offense to compliment the defenses we had back then.

The reason Archer failed is because he didn't recruit at a high level. He was a damn good ball coach, thus the reason he coached for so long in the NFL. But he did not get it done at LSU in recruiting leading to his downfall. It's also why LSU was bad when Curly got to LSU. Curly was a fantastic recruiter, he signed the #1 ranked class in America in 93 or 94 (which year I can't remember). Curly was a horrible in game coach and strategist. As one other poster said, in his last year 1994, 11-12 guys he recruited on that team went on to the NFL. Curly was a horrible coach, but a very good recruiter. Curly also liked his secretaries and the young LSU coeds.

Farmer Fran Orgeron is given way too much credit, he became a cartoon character after the National Championship

If it's any consolation, I think Curley is the reason LSU got the indoor practice facility that they currently have now.

TBH Arnsbarger wasn't much of a recruiter and liked the NFL because he didn't have to.

This list fits. Curley was definitely the worse coach at LSU.
