Arnsbarger wasn't much of a recruiter

His wife recruited more players than him. Players would often say, she was more like my mom or grandmother. LSU was winning with Arnsbarger, he kept a lot of instate talent home.

Dinardo could recruit, coaching was his problem.

Yeah and he was a pig on the side. But at least he can hide well enough that he can’t be served a subpoena.

Gerry DiNardo did something very intelligent when he got the job, he dropped Florida State and Texas A&M.
Curley Hallman always had 2 losses every year there, and Hallman had a very conflicting problem Louisiana had the Top 2 High School Quarterbacks in the Country; Peyton Manning and Josh Booty, he chose Booty and Booty chose MLB
Warrick Dunn choosing FSU hurt LSU a great deal, but the murder of his mother probably killed LSU'S chance of signing him

Joe Dean was quoted as saying DiNardo was one of the most intelligent college head coaches he ever knew. DiNardo's problem, according to Dean, was that he either pissed off or ran off some high quality staff members because he insisted he have full control over every little aspect of the program on the field. To a negative extent. Curley was a lot bigger pig than Miles, and that's saying a lot.

Considering he took over a horrid situation and left his successor with much more NFL talent than he inherited, yes there were worse.

In fact, there was a recent LSU national championship coach who left the program in much worse shape when he left than what Hallman left.

Pretty sure they had David Palmer (a wide receiver) play QB for much of the game.

Not sure if you remember or not, but David Palmer was the scariest dude in college football. You absolutely did not punt to him and you double covered him out the locker room. That Bama game, Jay Barker was hurt, so they played 2 other QBs (including Freddie Kitchens). It wasn’t until they said F it and put Palmer under center that they scored. In fact we couldn’t stop Palmer. If Palmer started that game, we get beat like a drum.

You can support Les Miles all you want but in hindsight you can see how much he wasted and screwed up.
... and yet, he won a national title, played for another, and never won less than 8 games in a full season.

You may be disappointed in not winning more natties, but that's opposite end of the spectrum from Curly, who never had a winning season.

Those who list Mike Archer-
10-1-1, 8-4 seasons.
