House passes NDAA as members leave town, angering conservatives in the process

The House passed the annual National Defense Authorization Act on Thursday, before its members leave for the year, angering many conservatives who feel as though Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) caved in negotiations.
However, much like when then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) passed bipartisan legislation that hard-line conservatives did not agree with, there will likely be a revolt.

“The Members of the House Freedom Caucus are prepared to use all available leverage to change the status quo,” the House Freedom Caucus said in a statement. “We will not simply vote ‘no’ on bad legislation and go home for Christmas.”
While the threat is vague, and members of the Freedom Caucus have refused to expand on what they mean by it, the disdain for this year’s NDAA was real.
The vote Thursday was 310-118, with 73 Republicans voting against the NDAA.
A main point of opposition to the NDAA was Johnson’s decision to include a short-term extinction of section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act until April 19, 2024.
“It's upsetting to me,” Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL), who voted against the NDAA, said. “... You can see the kind of trickery of DC where they try and attach FISA to the NDAA. That way, they can put you into that situation where if you vote against it, ‘Oh, you hate our military.’ Or if you vote for it, ‘Oh, you hate individual privacy.’ So these (are) poison pills.”

But, Johnson and the House leave for the year having passed this year’s NDAA despite angering many members of his conference. However, when they return, Johnson will have to put together and manage a highly fractured conference of people upset with his handling of issues and must pass legislation over the past month.

The Senate voted 87-13 on Wednesday to pass the 3,000-page, $886 billion legislation, which sets the Pentagon's spending priorities for the fiscal year, includes a 5.2% pay raise for troops, $11.5 billion for China deterrence efforts, and $800 million in Ukraine military assistance.
The legislation now heads to President Joe Biden's desk to be signed into law.

Any speaker on the republican side is going to be reviled today because of the pressure from populist factions.
They've been given an impossible mandate because the party is split.

Time for a new speaker.

I would say the way they bundle legislation is up there with Lobbying and Campaign contributions for why we are screwed as a country.

Bundling various items into one bill is unconstitutional. It suppresses robust debate which compromises representation.

So he got rid of it short term to get the defense bill passed and will work on a more permanent solution later? I’m ok with that
My question is was any additional border security measures included? He took a hard stance that he wouldn’t pass it without border security so if he caved there I’ll be mad
I misread. FISA was temporarily extended. I do see funding for the wall and increased border security was added
LINK
Also a good bit of anti woke stuff such as no pride flags on military installations, no spending funds on drag shows and such, no critical race theory taught in service academies and a freeze on DEI hires

Succinct and 100% correct.

Republicans in D.C. are the ones who broke trust. It's up to them to restore trust and I don't owe them anyhing before they do.

I guess it’s not terrible then.

This is their desired response. Its not exterminating the US citizenry, but do we want it?
The answer is no.
Make it a tad better than compete shite so the people say, "I guess it’s not terrible then."

Welcome to Washington, freshman.

They are trying to tie border security to Ukraine/Israel aid. NDAA is a separate bill from that

It’s probably better than McCarthy would have gotten done considering a split Congress and D president

I remember nearly literally fighting other kids in the early 80's over whether pro wrestling was "real."
I'm now in my 50's and the fight has just moved online with other guys my age.

Alright time to send him back to Louisiana.
Great job there Nitwit Johnson.

The ultimate Debt/USD trajectory will not change via Johnson's complicity in the Dem's *Omnibus* spending which are essentially laundering enterprises to support Leftist, Deep State interests and hegemony toward their "fundamental change". No Republican could withstand the MSM attacks when some (false flag?) atrocity hits and gets dumped in the Republican's laps.
Look at the Stock Market soar, on the basis of printed money/lowered Fed Rates with little or no basis for real economic productivity.
People can lie, but numbers don't. Shady Politics can't change that. Speaker Johnson will be hard pressed to cut it beginning next year for lining the Dem's pockets.

The differences between the ideological extremes is so wide now that governing by mutual concession has become impossible. The Democrats' "iron fist" approach to running their party has given them a decided advantage.
