HEB will be nationwide one day, if you're lucky.

Only problem will be by then in will no longer a private company and will be publicly traded and will never be the same.
Wish we could be as lucky on the East coast.

We do have a Wegman's here now, really nice store.

Not yet. Kroger is in the process but it’s getting anti trust flak.

Which explains the OP

Dollar stores are half grocery and there is a blue million of them. Good cheap crap on the corner is a great business model.

Not sure if serious?

The vast majority of American consumers get their groceries from just a handful of grocers.

One of the largest privately held companies in the US is in the grocery business but stays off the radar because they own so many grocers the public thinks are small stores or chains.

Grocery stores are low margin, high volume.

That was a generation ago at least

Most have slowly dropped established brands for their in store which have nice fat margins

Since you mentioned Krogers, think "Private Selection" and "Simple Truth" as examples.

Piggy Wiggly

In some areas, Piggly Wiggly is a franchise with a local owner like McDonald’s.

I think the biggest issue holding some stores is distribution. Distribution is usually handled by a 3rd party company like AWG and Associated Grocers of Baton Rouge. Those distributors purchase the bulk of the groceries in a grocery store and provide support for POS and inventory systems. Some will even help out with marketing and store signage.

Even some large chains will depend on these distributors to supply their stores. Rouses is one as they rely on AWG for some of its distribution to its stores.

Now some items are distributed directly to grocery stores from the manufacturer like bread, milk, meat, soda, seafood, alcohol, coffee, and some produce that bypass the large regional distributors.

Aldi is one that is trying to build that national network of grocery stores. But with its prepackaged items, no onsite deli, or bakery, and limited selection is it really a full service grocery like a Rouses.

Aldi is building a store in Houma where the old Twin Peaks was located. It is in a very busy corridor and not off the beaten path like the Thibodaux Aldi was hidden behind the Chick-Fil-A which opened this year. I wonder how that market will respond to a grocery with no crawfish or fresh meat in store about the size of a Walgreens. And don’t forget your quarter.

No mention of Rouses? frick y’all

In Louisiana, people shop at Rouse’s because there’s usually no other option (except Walmart).

In Texas, people have options, but choose HEB because it’s better.

No sane person in La wouldn’t welcome HEB with open arms.

Walmart #1 reason. Then Target and the dollar stores joined the grocery business. Hard for smaller, local franchise, chains to compete. The small chains used to thrive in rural areas - until Walmart took over.

Years ago there was a Kroger at the corner of Airline and Jefferson Hwy. The building is still there.

I guess in south Louisiana, but how far north does Rouse’s go? I’ve never seen one in north Louisiana.

Mainly Brookshires and some local chains in north Louisiana. Shreveport has Kroger and Whole Foods.

Love Publix. They are more expensive than Kroger but their quality and layout is top-notch. They are clean AF.

Exactly.

Walmart has just over 25% grocery market share (top us grocery retailer) and grocery accounts for about 58% of wmt sales.

Walmart is a grocery store.
