The withdrawal from Afghanistan was a major shite show.
Afghanistan was always going to be a quagmire. That being said, I’m of the opinion that we should have never left that base during the withdrawal.
Having a footprint in the region gives teeth to geopolitical conversations.

Why would we even want an airbase there? There's nothing in western China worth bombing that we couldn't just hit with a cruise missile. Anything in China that we'd want to attack is in the east and southeast....well within the range of our assets in South Korea, Japan, The Philippines, Guam, and our numerous carriers. China is currently in a slow death spiral and will fragment on their own if we'll just leave them alone.
