The run up to the kick, the goal post being at the goal line, all so different 53 years ago.

The kick was from their own 37-yard line so LoS was inside their own 45-yard line. With kickers legs today you would only have to go 20 yards from the kickoff to be in scoring position!

That record lasted and long, long time. Not many records last over 40 years.

Crazy how effortless that kick looked.

In addition to the points you made, didn't kickers drastically change their technique from 50+ years ago. I know you can't go off of Dempsey because of his foot; but didn't the other kickers from that era use more of the top of their foot (toes straight) as opposed to the inside arch?

Outdoors in the NOLA elevation and humidity is what makes this one still stand the test of the time to me even if it's been broken many times since then.

Yes they kicked with their toes back then which is not great for accuracy which is part of the reason why kickers are much more accurate nowadays. I remember my dad teaching me to kick a football by toe poking it like that which would never be taught today!

I miss the days when NFL kickers looked like him

He was one of the first famous/celebrity COVID-19 victims too.

Weird to see straight-on kickers. There were still a handful knocking around into the 1980s. Mark Moseley won NFL MVP in the strike-shortened 1982 season as a straight-on kicker and he kicked through 1986.

My Dad use to talk about being there. My Brother and I were talking about the kick a few years ago and agreed that we left (as we always did) with 5:00 left in the game

This version of the actual broadcast is better. It shows the sequence of plays leading up to Dempsey's FG. Also, the play by play announcer seems to think it's funny that the Saints & Dempsey are even attempting such a long FG. That's until the ball is about halfway to it's destination with his "I don't believe this" quote.

They did use special square toe shoes so they weren't kicking with regular cleats. Our high school kicker used those and would run a shoelace under the front of the shoe to raise it up and give himself an even better contact surface.

My Dad’s teammate & roommate at Auburn, Jackie Burkett, was the snapper on that play.

how many 60 yard plus field goals have been made - less that 20 i would wager.

Probably around there but my point was nowadays if the FG was 10 yards closer being in the field of play like it was back then, with the touchback being at the 25 instead of the 20, teams would reach FG range on the vast majority of drives.

I would think just about every NFL teams has a kicker they’d feel comfortable with attempting a 60+ yd FG today if they’re in a situation where they aren’t turning the ball over on a missed kick, such as a FG attempt with clock expiring.

Nine year old me was watching that game on TV,and couldn't believe they were trying that. When he made it, I ran into kitchen and yelled at my Mom " The Saints just won on a 63 yard FG!", and she's like "Well that's nice"

That was the legendary Don Criqui. Almost a decade later, he was the announcer for the original "Miracle At the Meadowlands." At the end of the clip, he references Dempsey's FG. LINK

ETA: Here's a short video of Dempsey's kick from the sidelines. No audio. LINK
