Car insurance question

My wife ran into someone the other day. The person she hit left the scene. The cops said they could do a report, but she would be at fault. Here is my question. How much should I expect my premium to increase in two months when it renews? 10%, 50%? The estimates I received so far is $3,000, but they expect that to go up once they remove the bumper. I am trying to decide whether to file ($500 deductible) or pay out of pocket. Has anyone crashed lately and had to renew with Progressive? Thanks.

Cops don’t determine liability. What happened? And was this in Louisiana?

If you can afford to pay out of pocket then pay out of pocket

Might be cheaper to pay out of pocket than to deal with the premium hikes that will continue for 5-7 years.

First off don't tell the insurance your wife ran into someone. if anything claim they ran into your wife and fled the scene. Hit and Run.

The actual bill will be 50-100% higher than the initial estimate.

Yes

What happened?
She was attempting to get into the left lane to get around a stalled car. The car in front of her stopped for no reason (green light) as she was merging, and she hit him on the passenger side rear bumper. Air bags did not deploy.

Well, there is video at that intersection. I am going to pass on the whole insurance fraud thing.

He may put her as vehicle #1 but you should dispute the absolute shite out of that. If there's no one there to corroborate the story, no way to determine who was at fault.
Also, she definitely it someone with warrants

Sounds like the hit and run vehicle created a sudden emergency that your wife could not avoid. Progressive should put fault on the other vehicle

The insurance company would need to subpoena the footage (if there even is any) - not going to happen in this case

Absolutely. If the claim rep you get has any experience whatsoever, they will quickly be able to tell that whatever sorry you make up doesnt make sense.

My experience, if you rear end someone you’re typically considered at fault.

I learned something the hard way a couple years ago.
If there isn’t major damage, even if you have to take a loan out from the bank and it take 2 years to pay it off, do that.
Whatever you do and I’m 100% not joking, do not put it on your insurance
You will come out way ahead paying the loan off than what your monthly pay will be on insurance

While I admire your conscience, you can in good conscience tell what happened without lying.
Car was stalled.
While going around it, made contact with another car which speed away without stopping.
ABSOLUTE TRUTH without admitting any fault.

Percentage increases don't tell us anything if you don't share your current insurance premiums.

They will not pull the video for an accident believe me I tried this in 2018 and was told by police and insurance company they will not do it.
Maybe if it's bad enough they will?
