re: What's the biggest audience reaction you've seen in a movie theater?

Also when it was over I’ve never seen so much of an audience just staying seated like that.

In third grade, I cheated on my history exam. In fourth grade, I stole my uncle Max’s toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play. In fifth grade, I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog…When my mom sent me to the summer camp for fat kids and then they served lunch I went nuts and I pigged out and they kicked me out…But the worst thing I ever done — I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa — and then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life.’

I sat behind a row of black guys in Django unchained. When Samuel Jackson kept talking about the N- on the horse we were all roaring. I couldn’t have laughed any harder but felt safe doing it because they were laughing just as hard

I watched The Dark Knight on opening night in a sold out IMAX theater.

Saw Jaws when I was way too young in the theatre with my parents. When the head appeared in the hole of the wrecked boat, every arse in there jumped

Last night when I went to the Taylor Swift: Eras Tour movie with my wife who graciously bought me a ticket to go with her.
I have been to this concert already with her under the same circumstances and if I had to guess a lot in the theater have been before too, and yet they all went to the movies to see it again. TS is one hell of a capitalist for being a liberal. She’s going to make another 100M off of this. The movie was literally just her concert from SoFi Stadium start to finish, ~3 hour runtime. No one can doubt how impressive that is to perform that long 3 nights in a row in front of a different packed NFL stadium every single weekend.
Anyway, by the time we got to the last 5 songs of the show about 75% of the moviegoers in our theater were up and dancing. it felt like being at a wedding and everyone knows it’s about to be over and after having enough drinks in them finally get on the dance floor before the nights over. Never seen so many people up and out of their seats in a movie theater before. You can’t hear it in a theater over the music, but I guarantee everyone was singing along too. It was just about impossible not to tbh
TS deserves props whether or not you like her. She’s one hell of a performer and it was fun even having been to see her on this tour already.
Eta if that’s cheating^^^ then Paranormal Activity for sure. I was in college and probably the majority of the theater were other drunk kids and it was hilarious listening to everyone shout instructions

Some people have mentioned scenes from ID4. When Whitmore fires the second missile at the spaceship in the final battle and it hits, that was the biggest reaction from the audience that I remember.

Saw Passion of the Christ in the middle of the Bible belt. So many audible and non-audible reactions were something.
Also, LOTR Return of the King was a blast.

The end of Infinity War. That was an incredible end to a phenomenally well done build up and universe. The entire theatre from “you should’ve gone for my head” to the end of the movie and walk to the parking lot was just stunned silence.
Dumb and Dumber in theaters is still the hardest I’ve ever laughed at a movie.

Borat and Stepbrothers for loudest laughing theaters. Both were a blast.

Saw Phantom Menace at a big theatre for a midnight opening. Oh my God. There are nerds and then there are people nerds make fun of. This crowd was the latter.
Was sitting next to a stranger in the packed theatre and he started having serious convulsions when the John Williams score blared and the big Star Wars logo crawled across the screen during the opening. I legit thought the guy was having a seizure and my mind started racing as to what you're supposed to do in that emergency situation to help them. I put my hands on him to hold him steady and he snapped out of it and looked at me like I was crazy. At that point I realized he wasn't having a seizure but was so excited that he started violently shaking.
I actually came here to post the opening 20th century fox, Star Wars crawl for Phantom Menace, entire audience clapped and cheered vigorously… then 2 hours went by and not quite the same reaction at the end.

Yeah, same. People were quiet when the cities got destroyed, but cheered for this.
