I like what they’ve done in the pen a lot.

People are really fixated on that #3 starter piece, but outside of that there really isn’t much to do. Roster as currently constructed is 7 wins better than any other team according to FG.

Like I said, if we get to October and Elder is starting G3 of a playoff series, that’s a failure by AA. But I think we’re more than good enough to get the 1 seed as currently constructed. Maybe adding a sure fire playoff SP at the deadline is cheaper. I’m not too concerned right now though.

Unless you are getting a true front line SP, probably better to add elsewhere. Paying $14M for Flaherty or $15M for Lugo isn’t appealing to me.

Really is throwing me off how we are so willing to take on salary for smaller parts this offseason. Maybe it works, but it just seems to be making things more convoluted than they need to be.

Seems like someone was just talking about that yesterday. Lol

Very much needed. Bullpen looks like it could be elite.

I wonder if the thought is Matzek insurance.

Minter, Bummer, Matzek, Lee, Kerr, Perdomo from the left side is certainly a big upgrade from this past year.

Very much so, we just need one or two (pending how Matzek responds) of the new additions to pitch above their previous stats to be really solid from the left side

That shouldn’t be appealing to anyone, but neither is 20m for Charlie to be fair.

With the way we’ve been so nonchalantly taking on salary, I get the feeling we had a bunch of money earmarked for Nola and once our plan A fell through, we didn’t really have a backup plan.

Yeah, if we get another “high level” SP it will be during the season. And some of you are way under selling some of the guys we have. Elder is not a bum. He’s a 24 year old dude who is still working on his game. It’s not his fault he was thrown to a red hot Phillies team. And he wasn’t that much worse than what Fried gave us. If we move Lopez to SP then have Shawver get some starts we’ll be fine through the break. Then AA can get some help.

Or we just sign Bauer now and get ready to win another 105 games.

Hell, in Cleveland, he was known as one of the hardest workers on the team and someone who was always looking for innovative ways to improve his pitching. Also, he has a rubber arm and will probably give you 200+ innings in a season.

I'd sign him in a heartbeat.

Since I am not expecting a big splash,
Brandon Woodruff on a 2 year deal is interesting to me. There is a chance he’s back at the end of the season (maybe unlikely and likely in a limited capacity). But think we will be fine in the regular season and if he can make it back he’d be a very a solid #3 in the postseason. But more than 24, he’s insurance on losing Fried/Morton in 25.

Maybe part of me wants this because I knew / played with his late brother.

High velocity, high-leverage, LH relievers >>>>>> than a great 3rd starter in the playoffs. I say we ride with what we got, as long as AA is willing to go get a starter at the deadline if we get 2nd half Elder, and none of the 5th starter options step up and grab that role.

AA went after Aaron Nola because he wanted AARON NOLA, not just another good SP. He's not gonna get a SP just to get a SP. And I'm fine with that, again, as long as he fills the obvious needs at the deadline and doesn't rely on a bunch of injured guys to come back healthy in September.

It's not exactly an either/or thing, considering the actual salaries for the relievers we did get don't exactly break the bank.

We entered this offseason knowing we needed to bolster the pen and shore up the rotation. Just because we've done half of that doesn't mean the job is done.

No one is saying this is what he should do. Point still stands that there were/are better pitchers than Morton and especially Elder available.

I don't disagree. I was just posting some thoughts since I haven't been able to in a while. My post was not meant to agree or disagree with any particular posts or points.

I still can't make much sense of us exercising Morton's $20m option.

If we gave that much money to a pitcher his age and the season he had last year in free agency, we'd be losing out minds.

Never struck out, and I can’t recall him ever making an error either.

FWIW, if there wasn’t an immediate need on the 40-man roster, I don’t know what it would have hurt to hold on to him for a few weeks, and even invite him to spring training to see if he could earn a bench spot. Unless it was just a matter of “professional courtesy” for a vet to release him and let his agent find him a spot.

LH bat off of the bench, that you are paying $4 million this season for anyway, with room on the 40 man roster. I’m with you; I don’t see why you don’t bring him to camp.

I really don’t understand the offseason plan this year. They are on the hook for some shitty contracts, with not a lot of improvement to show right now. I don’t get it at all.

We have spent like $30m this offseason vs last and maybe upgraded marginally in left. A downgrade is possible too, I guess.

We've definitely upgraded the pen, which was a focal point this offseason.

You're being ridiculous.
