Yeah we are acting like it’s the end of the world. Go read Dirt to Soil’s first three chapters to see a real test

We got .25 in West Monroe. Looks like less in Jackson and Winn parishes.

I’d almost be willing to bet Winn Parish will finish the year being 30” shy of normal annual rainfall.

I agree. The question is will the deer let it grow. Anything I’ve gotten to germinate has bee nipped by them almost immediately

Normally, we rarely see mature bucks on feeders, particularly in the daytime. Some of that has to do with the hogs hitting it constantly. This year, the guy with property next to ours has a trough feeder ten feet from the front door of his house. Every night he has several 3 YO bucks chowing down at the feeder while he sits in his recliner with a high ball watching them. The browse is extremely poor this year and there is no mast on the ground or in the trees, so the deer are hammering corn. If you place a feeder close enough to a house so the hogs don't come to it, but the deer will, you'll get some surprising action. Very bizarre year.

Yeah.

We at least got 2 3" rains a few months ago in Ouachita. Almost nothing in Winn.

Trying to post some pics, but I planted on 10/10, and the soil was moist. Got .2” the next day. Seeds germinated and almost 1” on 10/26 and 10/27. Things are looking pretty good.

These pics were Saturday 10/28.

Here’s the view on 10/10. We had a good rain 5 days before, ground was moist but you couldn’t squeeze any water out. It’s sandy soil, by the way.

Here’s 10/21,

This is what I planted

That looks REALLY Good! Hoping my seeds sitting in the ground waiting to germinate turn out similar from Drop Tine.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, glad to know someone has something growing!

Levee, we had a wicked drought both of the last 2 summers and I planted this year and last out of desperation. The soil moisture has been just enough it seems, then we got some rain, but I think fall plots are the most forgiving. Hope your crop is a good one.

As dry as I’ve ever seen it at our place in Madison Parish. We didn’t get much rain this week. Can’t bait due to CWD. It’ll be interesting for sure.

I’m learning, just keep trying. There’s so much you just don’t control. We have something growing, and I’m grateful for that, but I’m not seeing the deer hit it yet. They must have plenty of acorns right now. We’ll see.

Having a drill and the ability to disc an area helps. This is not the year to rely on no-till. Especially if you have turkeys and hogs.

I usually "throw-and-mow," which is sort of a poor mans no till... but not this year. I haven't disced in a couple of years but my plan is to turn dirt and cultipack this weekend and plant the following Friday or Saturday (a full month after I normally plant). I know not to have much confidence in long-range forecasts but several days of rain is predicted in my area starting Sunday 11/12.

Hey EarlyBird I’m all no-till the last 2-1/2 years. It looked like I disced this yr because the drought killed everything and I applied Roundup - weeds were gone.

I could have taken ground balls on some of my plots. The Dog Fennell did get high in some spots so I mowed it down to about two feet last weekend to ensure I get good coverage when I spread. The no-till can be great but you have a much smaller window in which to operate. Timing is everything. At a minimum, I'll put seed in the disc plots this weekend and cover the no-till plots late next week.

Red Stick Rambler

The forecast for next weekend is the best chance we've had so I'm blowing my wad this weekend and next. I'll spray after the seed is down to remove the competition and create some coverage, but I'm not sure it's necessary this late and under these conditions.

Good luck guys. I'm sure we'll be watching the radar like it's porn same as every year.

I went check on my plots. I have some clover and oats coming up but its so few due to the lack of rain. Hopefully this will kick start it to take off.
