Not so; Lsu was #1 in both AP and UPI polls in 1958 and were unanimous NC.

Iowa won the FWAA title, so no, LSU was not unanimous. The FWAA poll was the only full season poll at that time, which Iowa fans argue makes it more legit. And yes, Iowa does officially claim the 1958 title.
ETA: And interesting footnote: Up until last year, LSU had never won the Grantland Rice Award.

we could claim 1908.
And 1935, 1936 and 1962, too, but...

...Amen.

Care to guess who tied the Rebels in 1960, thus denying them a shot at an "undisputed" national title?
A 5-4-1 LSU team.
And Ole Miss was damned lucky to get away with a tie in that one. It ended 6-6 because we missed an extra point.

Actually No I just went through their website and it doesn't show where they claim the title in 1958.

I can assure you that the only polls that meant anything were the AP and UPI (I was there). I don't know where you are getting your information about the FWAA (whatever the hell that is), but the AP and UPI ran from preseason to end of season; sounds like full season to me.

If that's the case then I apologize for misleading anyone. I was under the impression that they did officially claim it because that's what I was told by two different Iowa fans.
They do at least have the Grantland Rice Award, which I'd be willing to bet they display in their trophy case.

When you look at UM, you don't think of championships. But a team that can step uup and bite you in the arse if your not ready. Beware tigers.
And I don't think you want to bring Bama into this argument. I agree 3 of our titles are manufactured, but you will still lose that argument.

They sure did. The way the AP flipped Minnesota around with a loss to Ole Miss' tie (to LSU ) was awful. AP and UPI really did screw Ole Miss.
Ole Miss did get screwed.
Ole Miss was the most consistent football power in the country from 1950-1970 and they had the highest winning percentage in that 20 year span. In the late 50's through the early 70's, the LSU-Ole Miss game was always one of the top games in the nation.
I hate Ole Miss with a passion - GO TO HELL OLE MISS! GO TO HELL!!

I wonder if Princeton claims their supposed 1869 championship - when American football was quite literally just soccer.
How could they? Princeton played one game in 1869 and lost.

Children in the late 50-60's before the Bear LSU and Ole Miss were ranked one and two so many times when they played it was unreal. They are almost always both in top ten. It was one of the premier rivalaries in all football. They came Bear and yes the AA athlete, and Ole Miss fell from a preannial national power and we fell out of the top ten.

old miss is always delusional when it comes it how many national titles they won that it's not even funny.

Ole Miss from 1950-70 was as good as any program in the country. And their 1960 title is legit.
That being said, they were a laughingstock before and after. The entire legacy of Ole Miss football spans a twenty year period when they were coached by Johnny Vaught.

Agree but Vaught was also part of the cause of the downfall he would not recruit AA, catholics, people from the Coast etc.

IMO,their 1960 FWAA title is legit.
It is. And is the only title that is legit. Minnesota got the AP title the same year because we were racist. That's it. sole reason. We went undefeated and they had a loss, and they gave Minn a title.
