Southern Cal's official practice is to claim titles in years that they were named #1 by ANY poll, no matter how irrelevant. One example is the 1939 title, which was awarded to TAMU by pretty much all the polls; however, a few years ago USC found that 1 or 2 obscure polls named them #1 that year. Shortly after this discovery, the number 1939 was painted on the side of their stadium along with all their other titles.

They got screwed in not getting the wire title in 1960

They sure did. The way the AP flipped Minnesota around with a loss to Ole Miss' tie (to LSU ) was awful. AP and UPI really did screw Ole Mis.

I think it had a lot to do with them being victim of policial correctness, before anyone even knew what that was.

Care to guess who tied the Rebels in 1960, thus denying them a shot at an "undisputed" national title?

A 5-4-1 LSU team.

On the 6 SEC titles, congrats. Does Barney Poole still have his ring?

I'm not begrudging you any success LSU has had past, present or future. And yes, it pisses me off that 15 years before I was born, LSU found a way to monkey wrench a perfect season for the Rebels. Rivalry is a great thing.

I'm simply stating that NC's back then were subjective. I say we had them, you say we didn't, Southern Miss says they have an NC... blah, blah, blah. But Don't down play them b/c they're old.

We'll grab a couple here soon I'm sure...

K, well, I'm not SURE, sure... but I'm damn sure hoping.

hey man, I'm just a student of college football history. I love my Tigers, but I give props where they are due.

Some folks can't take off their purple and gold glasses and give another team a compliment. Ole Miss was strong back in the 50's and 60's. FWAA was the only poll done after the bowl games. The 1960 title is pretty legit. If not for Cannon's run back Ole Miss would have had back to back titls. That 1959 team was one of the greatest in football history.

Yea I agree, Ole Miss had some great teams in the late 50's, it's not like they are simply pulling some of these claims out of thin air. My Great grandfather used to guard Coach Vaught as a Miss. highway state policeman and he would take my grandfather with him sometimes. My grandfather even showed me on the tape where he was standing on the ole miss sidelines as Billy Cannon ran by in the 1959 run. The great end to that story is my uncle ended up playing for LSU with Charlie Mac in the 70's and the whole side of the family that had been staunchly Ole Miss of course for all those years all "converted" to the Tigers haha.

Maybe the 2003 sec west champs banner on vaught-hemmingway stadium is what rekindled LSU fans being upset with how they talk about their championships.

Did anyone notice that we could technically claim the national championship in 1936 if we were to use USC'S "research techniques". According to the site the Williomson poll called us champions in 1936. Williamson seems as legit to me as Dickenson does to USC in 1939 haha.

I'm also happy, LSU doesn't resort to this sort of silliness. I mean, we could claim 1908.

i know some will disagree but we should claim the 1908 team.

Can't find it now, but someone on one of our sites posted a pick of a bumper sticker from Southern Miss claiming an NC among other divisional accomplishments. Not sure what sport, but it's "claimed".

They sure were...and so was Army...and Syracuse...and Maryland...and Minnesota, but not anymore.

See, Ole Miss is no more relevant on the current landscape of college football than these programs. The difference is they admit it. Ole Miss won't.

By the way, on that "recognized" national title thing, take a look-see at this...

Ole Miss is Irrelevant

I can't find the Rebs in 1959, 1960 or 1962.

Wonder why?

Oddly enough,it was in 1958. According to this article, they made a push to play LSU in the Sugar Bowl.
