Maybe this is the wrong forum but I trust someone here can give me some hints.
My buddy and I have been metal detecting an old yard where he found a WWI Victory medal. Stenciled/stamped on the edge is 190168 PTE D.H.McPherson 4-C.M.R.
Not sure I got the spacing exactly right but he'd like to identify the guy and maybe track down the family. From what I read the recipient's name, rank, service number and unit were impressed on the edge of the medal.
Anyone able to tell me how best to track this family d own?

Wow. That's an awesome find and this thread has some serious potential.
I'm of no help, but may WWII Collector or Antique Tiger can get you pointed in the right direction.

4th Canadian mounted rifles might be what the cmr stands for.

Awesome find, and good on y'all for trying to locate the owner.

190168 would be the regiment number.
Fairly confident he was a Canadian military man, 4th brigade. Google search picked up a few things.

I was going to suggest submitting a story about this to “Western & Eastern Treasures” metal detecting magazine. They loved to publish stories about returning old high school rings, etc to the families of the original owners. Sadly, it looks like W&E Treasures stopped publication (digital; hard copy stopped a while back) after 57 years.
Regardless, Im sure there are sites that would be happy to publish this story after it unfolds. Take pics, etc and document things as you go along.

Now that Father's Day is over, I reached out to one of the family. If I don't get a reply or phone call in a couple of days, I'll try a different one.
I'll also attempt the pics sometime this week. Benny's got them posted on a metal detecting Facebook group.
