I was in elementary school in the 70s and never had nuke drills.

We saw the "duck and cover" videos from the 50s, but that was it.

Because of the free range aspect, kids matured faster than they do today.

Not sure how old you are, but i promise you that the Cold War was a very real thing.. it was all over the news, and there was also a hugely publicized Movie of the Week[tm]- back when MOTW’s were a big deal- called The Day After, which portrayed the after effects of nuclear fallout on middle America.. i think that the legendary acting icon Steve Guttenburg was in it … So yeah, maybe my parents could have doen a better job shielding me from certain news and tv shows- but you’d have to be a nitwit, or a taco short of a combination plate, to not know that the threat of nuclear obliteration was very, very real .

Sure it was a real thing. I mentioned in a previous post some of my fondest memories are from summer 83, and some of those memories are of me and my friends talking about how, at 17, there was a good chance we wouldn't live past 20, that the world would be engulfed in a nuclear firestorm by then. We didn't care. There wasn't anything we could do about it. What we could control was having a good time, and in that we succeeded.

The movie "Red Dawn" caused us to make stoned plans to make sure if the SHTF we'd meet up at certain spots to form an underground, and there were other absurd fantasies, but that's what made being young then so great. We didn't freak out about stuff. We took what life threw at us and made the best of it.

I don't believe anyone ever said the missed the 1930s.

In 10 years some like me will be long dead and buried.

Those between 1905 and 1945 had to deal with
Financial Panics
World War I
Spanish Flu
Great Depression
Dust Bowl
World War II

1945 to 1965 had prosperity but less freedom

1965 to 1975 had prosperity and freedom

1975 to present has seen an erosion of both as we let fewer folks control all of us while "victims" have replaced "survivors" and "me" has replaced "we". Sadly we work less towards solutions and more on blaming somebody else.

(just the view of an old guy who has lived through most all of this)

Accept for the failed war on drugs, oilfield busts in 82 and 87, and the shitty ecomony of the early 80s.

Parents in the 80s I'm sure lamented how shitty it was compared to their day back in the 50s.

They didn't, though. Never heard anything about the 50s from my parents, my friend's parents, my parent's friends, or any other random adult during that period.

It was a great time to be alive. Everything was simpler.
