This too. We lived outside...riding bikes, playing basketball, tennis, swimming at a buddy's house, at the lake...we just were never inside in front of our TV with 3 stations.
Nailed it. All of these and fishing on the riverbank with friends. We really had it good back then compared to today.

Became a lawyer that alienated Mark and Mel. I believe he grabbed the royalties left.
Still kicks arse drumming. Saw him playing for Bob Seger.

I’m 53 and I can definitely remember when eating out was a big deal. Options were limited as far as fast food goes and we just ate at home.
Not like that anymore for most.

Awesome name for a rock n roll band imo

It’s a damn shame that GRand Funk is not in the Rock N Roll hall of fame!

This. 100%. The single most positive thing the federal government could do to help the health of the average citizen is to ban (or, at least, heavily restrict) HFCS.

Diet changes are part of the reason for the plethora of fatties but also folks did more stuff for themselves.
Only the old and the infirm had someone else do their lawns.*
Wash their cars.
Paint their houses.
Clean their houses.
Take care of their pools (although pool ownership was very rare compared to today).
I still do most everything around my places but I am a statistical anomaly in my peer circle.
I’ve got a flexible schedule, which works.
I can afford Owlie & Pals to do my lawn, clean my gutters, et al, but choose to do them myself.
*Unless you were truly well-off.

OBTW, that group touring right now is not GFR. No Mark Farner = not Grand Funk Railroad.

Mark, Don, and Mel rejoined briefly in the late 90s, they were still awesome

Same here. No chain fast food joints where I lived, just mom and pop drive-ins and small restaurants.
I remember a 7-11 (before it was Circle K) in a neighboring town when they started selling the Big Gulp soft drink that was bigger than the “large” drink of 16 ounces— I think it was an increase to 24 oz. Then it went to 32 oz, kept on getting larger.
Calories in >>>calories out
To OP, GFR was a great American band. Some Kind of Wonderful is a classic.

I saw them at the Warehouse in NOLA many years ago. It was so stinking hot in there that I lost 10 pounds. BTW that was a great band!

I went to the orthodontist in Opelousas (I loved about 30 minutes away). Burger Chef was a treat for sure.

when I was in school (70s and early 80s) you usually only had maybe 1 fat kid in a class. We didn't sit in front of a tv playing video games, we rode bikes and ran around and played chase and walked all over the neighborhood. As young adults we didn't eat a whole lot of fast food and junk food crap, not so much candy and chips and cokes etc.
ETA- I see a lot of extremely fat woman at the grocery store, paying with food stamps and their basket is chock full of junk! My guess is they sit on their fat asses all day and eat Oreo cookies and drink Grape Fanta.

I thinking smoking (cigarettes) kept a lot of adults thinner. So far as kids, in the 70's I did not get snacks or drinks when my folks filled up for gas, unless we were on a long road trip.
Having a coke was a treat. We were not poors, my parents and everybody else I knew had parents who regarded candy bars and soft drinks as a once a week or weekend treat. We ate a serving of homemade dessert after dinner.
I think when women started working away from home, they wanted their kids to like them during the remaining amount of time they spent with them and saying no became tougher. Also, spending money on junk food didn't seem as wasteful when you had two incomes.
IMHO a sad trade off, overall, I'm not convinced we are better as society for losing stay-at-home moms and think if their efforts were regarded as highly as paying jobs many women would choose to stay home with younger kids.
