Were you that worried about the people who smoked marijuana? Im all for being tough on certain crimes, but using marijuana isn't one of them.

The Fk around & Find out is disproportionate there.

You Fk around a little; you’ll find out a lot. Making the place safer for all.

Pretty par for the course around the Pacific Islands/Malaysia/Asia. Side note Singapore was one if not the cleanest places I've ever travelled to for work. Enjoyed it.

I really enjoy Singapore when I go. Would move there if given the opportunity.

While I don’t agree with their drug laws I agree with their approach to the punishment.

I think here in the states everything should be legal but if you strung out and harm/fight/steal another it should be a minimum 2 year jail sentence - that’s just the starter for anything and strongly enforced. Any harm to another human should have stricter punishments in the states than they currently rely have.

Best place I've ever visited. I made sure to not bring weed and to behave myself so your mileage may vary, like this guys.

When my wife came over to meet me when we made a port call in Singapore in 1990. We were the only round eyes walking around in Chinatown and we felt safer there than if we were in any large city in the US.

Which would be more effective at deterring crime? Paying more in taxes to build more jails and hire tougher district attorneys? Eliminating federal benefits of those whose immediate family members are convicted of felonies? Or, adapting some of the “crazy” sentences that other countries around the world use (chopping off hands of thieves, public hangings, etc.)?

Kid got caned for spray painting cars. I remember that all over the news at the time

quote:

Michael Peter Fay (born May 30, 1975) is an American who was sentenced to six strokes of the cane in Singapore in 1994 for theft of road signs and vandalizing 18 cars over a ten-day period in September 1993, which caused a temporary strain in relations between Singapore and the United States.[2] Fay pled guilty, but he later claimed that he was advised that such a plea would preclude caning and that his confession was false, that he never vandalized any cars, and that the only crime he committed was stealing road signs.

Although caning is a routine court sentence in Singapore, Fay's case garnered some controversy and was widely covered in the media in the United States, as it was believed to be the first judicial corporal punishment involving an American citizen.[3] The number of cane strokes in Fay's sentence was ultimately reduced from six to four after United States officials requested leniency. He was caned on May 5, 1994.

I don't remember that unless it was the same guy. See my edit above.

I remember being interested in that story at the time because I was close in age and thinking about getting my arse beaten in Singapore with a cane
