Make sure to get the "Who Rescued Who?" sticker when you finally find the right match.

I have a strong opinion that dogs manifest the appearance and behavior of their owners.

I kinda agree, but that "heart stick" method that some of these places use can get fricked.
A bullet to the brain stem while they munch on their favorite snack is more humane than that shite.

I take it "a good match" is an animal that doesn't need actual skill and real attention to thrive - i.e. the very animals in shelters in the first place?
This. If you want a dog and are spending lots of time at shelters "finding the perfect match", owning a shelter dog probably isn't gonna be for you...

It’s depressing. When we were looking for a dog it seemed like half the dogs at any given shelter were pit bulls.

There’s an older lady near me that did just that. Her biggest concern these days is that she’s had to convert about half of it to a pit bull shelter.
The majority of her budget now goes towards staff and kennels for the pit bulls to keep them separated from the other dogs, even though the pit bulls and pit mixes account for only about 25% of her rescues.
There’s three huge yards of dogs running free, plus a cat house. Then the other side are rows of kennels of pit bulls and mixes that are too dangerous and aggressive to let run free with other dogs.
She desperately wants to get out of the pit rescue business, but she’s too kind-hearted.

So, the wild?

Like this place?
Costa Rican Dog Sanctuary
I specifically wanted a purebred basset hound, but my wife and I also wanted a mate for him to hang with during the workday as well. So we went to a shelter for a small-to-medium size dog. I wanted a little heartworm-positive, deaf beagle named Fred, but my wife talked me out of it due to the likely health needs. We settled on a big-arse border collie-mix sweetie. So I feel like we helped do our part.
Some of the shelters we visited were just pitiful pitiful, but Gulfport runs a really clean and professional Humane Society Shelter. And, yes, the vast majority of breeds at most of the shelters were pit mixes, which we'll have nothing to do with. (One shelter even had a mean-arse basset hound-pit mix.)

Shelters really are sad,a lot of dogs that really want attention. We rescued one and brought it home but ultimately had to take it back.
We had an old shelter rescue that was a wonderful dog,I bought a Redbone female ,she and the old dog became best buds but after about a year he died.
We decided she needed a companion so we found a female dog at a shelter, same color as the Redbone.
Sweet dog and got along well with our other dog but she became extremely jealous of the other dog.Twice when wife was petting our dog,the shelter dog attacked our
dog and it was an all out brawl.First time I kinda blew it off but 2’nd time I realized this wasn’t going to work,so we took her back.
I kinda feel Ike the lady at the shelter knew there might be an issue because she suggested we take her as a foster for a couple weeks before finalizing the adoption.
Dtr in law got a rescue puppy, about 6 months old that we puppy sit most work days ,so our dog and the puppy play a good bit.

He was looking pathetic, living in an unkempt yard, dirty, sad. I threw him a dog treat. He knocked a board out of my fence, so he could stick his head out. I pet him. Next day I saw him laying at my back step covered in dirt. He had dug a hole under the fence to get to me. That dog wanted a friend so bad. I walked him back to the neighbor's yard and he cried when I put him back in the yard. All these years later and I still cry about it. I wanted to adopt him, but it wasn't my dog.
I would have had a very hard time not confronting the owner

Wife has a yardfull of rescues; they'd all be dead otherwise. I noticed the extraordinary color/markings on one and did research, and I think it's a Catahoula Curr. Beautiful grey with unique gold highlights. Great temperament. I wish they all could roam free, but that is not possible nowadays. Being naturally curious like me, they'd be roaming the neighborhood and causing mischief.
Good thread. Good folk.

My gym has a donation box for a local animal rescue. Members bring in food, toys, treats, etc. When the box is full it is dropped off at the shelter.

We saved a few great dogs. But they die and its just too hard. I've said if I ever get diagnosed with a terminal disease and i know i'll outlive it, I'll get another. So, I may have that to look forward to.
