Was a manager at a municipal animal shelter for 3 years. I saw a lot of crazy and heart breaking stuff. I only lasted 3 years and had to get out for my own well being.

If I ever come across a bunch of money I've always wanted to have an animal sanctuary with a bunch of land where animals can come and live out their life without being put down.

Are you my wife, she always says that shite. I tell her that's ridiculously expensive and you've got to have something else at least making money to offset that loss. Without it, it's just not sustainable.

One of the saddest things I ever saw was a neglected dog. I ignored it for a while, because not my business. I never wanted to be, "That guy." You know, the nosey neighbor.
He was looking pathetic, living in an unkempt yard, dirty, sad. I threw him a dog treat. He knocked a board out of my fence, so he could stick his head out. I pet him. Next day I saw him laying at my back step covered in dirt. He had dug a hole under the fence to get to me.
That dog wanted a friend so bad. I walked him back to the neighbor's yard and he cried when I put him back in the yard. All these years later and I still cry about it. I wanted to adopt him, but it wasn't my dog.
There is a special place in hell for people that abuse/neglect animals and children.

It’s infuriating to me. I called animal control once to see if there was anything that could be done and they basically said nope. His dogs, his property. They said as long as they weren’t abandoned (alone) nothing they can do

My sister and BIL did dog transport all over southern La. They went nuts with adopting dogs and cats.. He passed away and now she has to deal with 10 or 11 dogs and dozen or so cats in her house... This started shortly after Katrina and was the last time I visited her house. We just don't talk about because of how crazy it is...

When I was looking for my dog, this his home multiple times. All the poor pups with heart worms, basically destined to not be adopted. Fix your goddamn animals.

This is Sazerac. I got her 5/21/22 from a shelter. Abandoned, picked up by an animal control officer and spent three months in a small kennel in Wise County.
It was her second time on a kill list. I went up there, liked her and she’s been a great dog. Just needed a chance.
When I first went in, I had to turn around and leave to compose myself because the smell, barking and cages were so depressing. Almost cried.
Those volunteers really care and put their money and time where there mouth is. A lot of respect for them.
I wouldn’t have such a great dog now if they’d not fought to get Sazerac off that kill list the first time.
Saz and I are both very lucky. And grateful.
Edit: apparently I don’t know how to post images. Why is this site still demanding pictures have a link? It’s 2023.

We just picked up cat number two today from the Scottish Fold breeder we got the other one from. This new buddy is a tiger striped straight ear kitten. Same daddy cat, different mothers. I expect they will get along well in a week or so. Also got a new Litter Robot delivered today and set that up already.

You set something up like that, donations are easy to come by.

Excellent idea. My wife volunteers at our local animal shelter and it has given her a sense of purpose and these abandoned and mistreated animals are so appreciative of human contact.
BTW. We have two boxer/pit mix dogs that are currently going through socialization training and two cats. All rescues and all spayed or neutered.

I got into animal rescue right after Katrina as well. Fostering dogs until their owners could be located. And have been doing transport and volunteer work since.
I love doing it and the shelters can ALWAYS use the help if anyone is thinking or looking for some volunteer opportunities. Most of the animals are so happy to have someone give them love and attention and that really makes it worth it.
If I didn’t travel so much for work I absolutely would have multiple animals. So that’s probably for the best.

It is heartbreaking. My first dog was a shelter dog and my current dog is a purebred.
The way I look at it, I’m a responsible pet owner. I’m not abandoning pets and my dog is spayed/neutered. I did my pet with one shelter dog so I’m done adopting dogs that some POS person bred and abandoned. It’s their fault, not mine.

The drive behind the pet fostering we do is because of the deplorable conditions that I know these poor animals are enduring. I know we can't rescue them all, but at least I know I'm doing something. I currently have foster dogs, of which we just found forever homes for 3 others recently. We have several momma cats, one of which just had four kittens yesterday in our bathroom. In time, they'll all get adopted to hopefully great homes.
