U.S. Rep. Garret Graves told supporters Tuesday what most people had expected: he will not run for governor this year.
quote:
Graves made his announcement amid speculation that Stephen Waguespack, the president and CEO of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, is about to announce his candidacy for governor. Waguespack was a top aide to former Gov. Bobby Jindal. He has not responded to phone calls or texts.
The Republican candidates for governor are Attorney General Jeff Landry, Treasurer John Schroder, state Sen. Sharon Hewitt of Slidell and state Rep. Richard Nelson of Mandeville.
Shawn Wilson, a Democrat who just stepped down as secretary of Transportation under Gov. John Bel Edwards, announced his candidacy on Monday. Edwards has endorsed Wilson in the race.

Rumor going around that the head of LABI will step into the race tomorrow.
We will found out.
We will found out.

Yeah would be tough to leave the easy life of the swamp and actually have to work as governor

Less than a week after Wags just hosted the candidates?
Nice.

The guy has never held down a job outside of government and couldn’t even be bothered to finish his college degree.
Hard pass for governor.
Hard pass for governor.

I have been a staunch supporter of Garrett Graves for a long time. He is an extremely hard worker, and there is no doubting that.
However, lately he’s been involved in a lot of swamp shite, which is baffling because he has remained neutral in the past.
Namely:
- his support of Ukraine funding. frick you Garrett for giving my money to fund that shitshow.
- he is actually bragging about trying to secure pensions for government employees like himself. I have a huge issue with that. I would never vote for shitty government employees to actually have a better benefits system than I do. There is a reason why pensions were removed from the private sector, because it’s not sustainable. I have no issue with employees being put on a 401(k) like I am. So this way they would have skin in the game to improve the fricking economy. The whole world can collapse around the government employee and they’re still going to get a pension is bullshite.
So, Garrett, if you or one of your interns happen to read Tigerdroppings - frick off. You’ve lost my vote until you get your shite together. Don’t be surprised if you lose the next re-election.

And I couldn’t care less. What added knowledge or skill would a completed degree actually bring to the job?
What matters is the knowledge of what is wrong with the state, the knowledge of how to fix it, the ability to fix it, and the drive to see that work completed.

Agreed, along with him voting for handouts during COVID as well and helping cause the massive inflation we see now.

LABI was against legislation that would prevent mandating COVID vaccines.
Waguespack ain't going to cut it either.

After Graves met with Landry a week or two ago I figured that was going to be his response.
I'm guessing Landry worked a deal with him that if Graves waited 8 years, Landry would support him. If so, this will be interesting to watch as I would think he likely struck a similar deal with Billy to the one Billy has had with JBE (nothing negative against him during the campaign/election in exchange for Billy/LtGov having a bigger seat at the Governor's table).

Short of some Larry Craig-esq scandal, he’s going to have no real problem getting re-elected to his Congressional seat.

Will be curious to see all who and what Landry may owe if he becomes Louisiana’s next Governor.

I think he's looking toward the US Senate and all its bennies.

Sadly, you are correct but of all the great things he's done. It does not come close to outweighing the stench from the Ukraine funding & pensions for tenured employees. That sickens me.
We need term limits and Congress should NEVER be able to vote for their own raises and benefits. WE should be paying their salary - NOT themselves.

We have term limits already. They’re called elections.

So that's not what he is pushing for. In many states (including Louisiana) teachers do not get Social Security, they pay into a state system. If their spouse was in Social Security, it gets reduced after they die because it is considered a "windfall."
So consider, the husband makes most of the money and the wife is a teacher. The husband dies but rather than the wife receiving a surviving spouse benefit, it gets reduced by wife's pension amount.
That screws over a widow who spent most of her life teaching. I promise you I am as pro-reform of both social security and public pensions as anyone, but this should be fixed.

Good for you.
To most people, starting a college degree program and not finishing it says a lot.
The guy is the definition of silver spoon and wouldn’t even have gotten his start in politics if it weren’t for his daddy hooking him up with cushy aide positions.

A statement like this completely ignores the money and power incumbency gains each year and term in Washington DC.
Next thing you know, someone like a Shelia Jackson Lee has $6 Million built up in interests to help her get re-elected in a poor arse district where probably no one else could even scrape up $300k to try to unseat her.
