This entire generation is me over team.

Lou Holtz said it best

Todays athletes talk about rights and privileges.

Yesterdays talked about obligations and responsibilities.

"They will have been paid at that point. The fear (which I think is grossly over blown) is that an injury now could hurt his draft stock and hence his earnings. There’s a big drop off in salary after the top 10-20 picks"

How many top 20 picks do we have opting out?

and paid for by football.

Not really relevant to the discussion but all the more reason the football players don’t owe it to anyone play in a meaningless exhibition game that’s sole purpose is content for TV networks.

quote:

the players owe the University, and their teammates something.

The only people I see bitching about are fans. I’m pretty sure the teammates understand and the semester is over.

quote:

The University that gave them scholarships to play (scholarships funded, directly and indirectly, by the fans).

And the fans wouldn’t support it at this level with the elite players. Given as you pointed out other sports are largely funded by football sounds like the players have given more than enough to have “earned” a pass on skipping a meaningless exhibition game which requires them to spend the bulk of the holidays away from their families, risk injuries that could harm future earnings potential so the team can maybe finish ranked a little higher?

Also football and the scholarships would still exist without the massive fan support of top level D1 programs. It exists in high schools and lower levels of college without the massive stadiums and tv deals. There would probably be fewer of them but would nevertheless still exist

The salaries decrease each round.
The semester is over And the players declaring for the draft mostly if not all will not be enrolled in the spring. So they have to come back to campus and spend the holidays practicing for an exhibition game that will be what the difference between finishing ranked 12th instead of 22nd

You guys are fretting way too much over something so trivial

I agree , it has to be fixed.. The Bowls, Conferences, and NCAA needs to make it where players want to play.

Give a bonus to the winners , whatever a bonus can be, that money needs to come from somewhere , NFL, TV sponsors and advertisers. And make the gift bags nicer.

The team that loses , get a smaller bonus.

Players who want to impress the NFL need to realize A injury can happen at anytime any game , in practice or a bowl game.

I’m sure there are ways to do this and everyone makes a profit. The bowls, teams, players and advertisers... Players can’t be stupid greedy, If you cut off the head of the Goose that lays the golden eggs .. guess what... no one gets anything.

Quit worrying about bowl games (unless in the final 4). They mean nothing and used to be a reward for the players. Anyone that bases next year rankings on this year bowl games should not be voting.

It has nothing to do with game performance in a bowl game, when a player already has tape for 12, 24, or 36 games.

Bowl games used to be a more significant part of that process, even the ones not directly affecting the national championship. Lots of good bowl game performances (when everyone was watching) moved guys up on draft day and made them millions of dollars

How many of those 32,000 were injured on the bus ride to the stadium?

I bet those 2 wish they had opted out
sure, but I'm talking about bowl risk, which is very, very small.

I'd guess more football players have had career threatening injuries off the field than in bowl games.

The coming expanded playoffs will fix most of these issues.
The "issue" will never be fixed.

The bowl games, before BCS, were all exhibition games. Until 1965, the AP voted on the final poll before the bowl games. The Coaches Poll waited until 1974.

The playoffs are going to amplify the issue because you're going to have teams in the playoffs, and the games are going to be affected by which teams lose players and which don't.

Purdue is way worse off than LSU with the opt outs and coaching turnover. It would be embarrassing to lose.

I’m not too concerned. Jones and Guillory both have plenty of experience and I’m excited to see more of Zavier Carter. I guess one of Tygee Hill, Bryce Langston, or Fitzgerald West will also play some in this game

It will be fixed when playoffs expand. Bowl games will mean something. Minor bowls will fade away.

This what happens when the players run the program instead of the school and coaches.

See pro bowl, where they participate but “opt out” of tackling and real football,
as future of college bowl games.

Basically will be corn hole tournaments.

So you want young black men to work against their will.

Sounds familiar.
