old gentleman that routinely played pickup basketball in the REC? He couldn't really move, but he'd camp in the corner and drain 3's if you ignored him.

I'd say Jordy Hultberg. He was nearly automatic from the corner (before the 3 point shot), but wasn't short.

I thought this thread would be about Mike Toole

Bingo. Worked out at same time as him quite a few times 1993-1995.

Great place for pick up games in the late 80's. It was common to have a couple MBB players in there and subsequently Dale Brown from time to time. I think he was just making sure the guys weren't skipping class. Only so many places to hide.

2005ish but I remember an older man out there.

CSB: I got dunked on by Tyrus Thomas in a pickup game at UREC

He was redshirting and playing pickup to stay in shape

You are referring the field house from the 80s. Also played a lot at the old "gymnatorium" by the mounds that was eventually repurposed for something else now. REC didn't open until 1992. I was there '91-'96 and we thought it was the best think ever built the first couple years, top of the line for that time.

I was a rec Regular from 1999-2004.

Definitely remember the old white guy. Short haircut. Full white/silver hair.

Ready to ball.

I think it’s only fair that the man gets his own thread in the rant. He is definitely a legend.

P.S.
I also saw the albino squirrel. Big Facts.

I went to LSU in 86 so not sure if he was there that long ago. I was kicking arse then in BB and also in intramural BB.

Used to go play inside the Pmac with Anthony Wilson and had some great one on one and horse games during our PE class.

Henry Smith.
Played ball for NC State when he was young. Played at Rec Center into his 70s. He had a PhD but not sure what it was in. He was some sort of consultant. He had some connections because he hooked me up with some great tickets one time. I heard he had some sort of heart episode playing out there about 10 years ago and passed from it.
He would always pick me up on his team and expected me to do the same. I couldn’t turn him down. He also jogged a few miles every day in addition to playing basketball. He wouldn’t hesitate to bitch if you were on his team and weren’t hustling. He loved to try to snowbird but if you passed him the ball you better not lead him because the old fellow wasn’t going to get to it.
Great guy. RIP

Yep. We always just referred to it as the rec center. Just to north of victory hill between Indian mounds and PMAC. Upstairs gym.

I remember him like it was yesterday linking his fingers. I also remember big Marcus Spears playing pick up games out there. Dude could run pretty good up and down the court for a guy his size.
