There is not enough room on the schedule to play a yearly game with a school like Tulane
no but there’s room for FCS opponents every single year and Southern

Good take

Guess where Alabama is playing a true road game next year? At USF. An AAC school.

And tulane has offered in past to even have their home game be in the dome and split gate. But LSU won’t agree to it

One sided rivalries mean something. Ask Tennessee fans who went 15+ years without beating Alabama if it didn’t mean something to win. And Alabama fans if it didn’t sting just as bad to lose

I mean at least both of these teams are very relevant on the national scene and for the last 20 years the games have been mostly very competitive.

You DO know that there are universities that don't have football as their highest priority, right? Different universities excel at different things.
. Is that why they asked to get back into the SEC?

quote:

Harvey Schiller told me in August that Tulane expressed interest in rejoining the SEC in the late 1980s while he was SEC commissioner, but the conference wasn’t interested. However, Tulane’s interest in rejoining the SEC did turn the league's eye toward expansion, and the conference added Arkansas and South Carolina

Another notable quote from that article:

quote:

Tulane sought more scheduling freedom to play opponents from a broader geographical footprint rather than being bound by an SEC schedule. “It sure can’t do us any harm,” Tulane football coach Tommy O’Boyle was quoted as saying. “Tulane is a national university. Now we can play a national schedule.”

This is a tactic for P5 schools who want to make a presence in the fertile recruiting ground of New Orleans

We already have a presence there full-time. Thus scheduling Tulane would be a waste of time

"Tulane has even offered to play in the Dome & split the gate"? As the saying goes nowadays, that's fake news. LSU would lose too much money if that was even true, & in today's college football world, neither LSU or any other Power 5 school can afford to lose half a million + dollars. Playing Southern was purely a political play to keep the woke wolves away. You do recall LSU had 37 points in the first quarter? And I'll keep repeating this fact : tulane has not sold its allotment of tickets in T.S. going on almost 50 yrs now.

I agree. Why some would rather us play bums like Southern, New Mexico and UAB instead of Tulane is beyond me.

7 times a decade, 5 at Tiger Stadium and two at the Superdome.

So how is Alabama able to do a road game at USF?

Or UF at UCF?

Or Ole Miss at Tulane?

Or Oklahoma agreeing to play at Tulane?

Tulane wanted home and home.

LSU was losing money.

This isn’t difficult.

Tulane can join the rotation of FBS Louisiana schools...or not. I would prefer yes, but if they choose to pass on the check every four years, then so be it.

UF was dumb to schedule that one.

Ole Miss, Alabama, and Oklahoma want to recruit those out of state areas, and playing in person may help them.

Why was it ended?
Because for one thing, Tulane had fewer than 2000 fans attending their games. When the game was played in New Orleans, it was 99% LSU fans. However, in order to buy the LSU-Tulane ticket, Tulane demanded that you buy the entire season tickets. It was only sold as part of their season ticket package. When Tulane played in Baton Rouge, they got half the gate (maybe not half, but some absurd number). LSU stood NOTHING to gain by playing Tulane and everything to lose.

So NO, just NO on a LSU vs Tulane renewal. I'm happy to see them faring OK, and I'll pat them on the back, but it's just plain ignorant of the past to want to start playing them again.
