Im sorry it’s called Das Kapital, but he doesnt define capitalism, he questions it and ultimately disagrees with it. It’s an opinion but a very good one. Read it. I don’t necessarily agree with him totally, but he’s got a point

So if no one can afford housing, who are the ones affording said housing that others can’t afford?

Maybe, the government has yet again caused the very problem they are trying to “fix”…

In a utopian fantasy, completely unrealistic and historically proven to be totally non-feasible sort of way, yea.

You have no right to do this.

Stop the overseas buying of property, where buyers (like China) make money by not having tenants in large buildings (market exclusivity),

I agree with banning China from buying US land, as they do the same to us already.

quote:

invest/renovate already existing public housing projects,

No. They're not in bad condition because no one "invested" in them. These people destroy things, like your fellow Marxists. You don't create shite.

quote:

give newly graduated college students some sort of financial help in owning property

Why? Are new graduates a big part of the homeless population? If you majored in art history or gender studies or whatever you majored in, you deserve to be homeless.

quote:

stop billionaires from building skyscrapers in heavily homeless urban areas
Why, and under whose authority? Does this make homeless people super-duper-homeless?

The underlying problem is that people like you and your sociology professor do not add value to the system, then you're mad when the system rewards you in kind. If you want things, provide value to the system that is equal to the value of the things you want.

Ok. What about rate increases on mortgages of owners?

Cost of building supplies? We capping that too?

Keeping maintenance employees wages depressed? We doing that?

Replacement HVAC and appliances. We capping that too?

Property taxes. We lowering or capping them?

Increase in taxes on the landlord. Capping? Lowering?

Do you agree to never get a raise as you work? As other costs rise? You cost your employer more in wages.

I love the bunch who scream “increase my wages!!!” while also screaming “Keep rent cheap!!”

How and why? Why should landlords be forced to carry the bag when market conditions change?

I guess HUD and Section 8 don’t exist ? If you can’t find affordable housing in this country, it’s your problem not everyone one else’s. There are multiple programs that provide housing for the less fortunate.

It’s not people’s fault that people are moving into their area and their wage isnt changing but their rent is. That’s the start of homelessness. Those tenants are still citizens that contribute

So is minimum wage a livable wage?

It depends on the amount of expenses you wish to incur.

We know people can live off the land free of charge.

A true minimum wage is zero. We have that and we call those internships. It’s a great system that allows people to acquire knowledge and experience to become more marketable.

The problem is a minimum wage that makes otherwise willing people unemployable at an arbitrary wage rate.

Do you ever wonder how many people could have learned lessons of the workplace to become more marketable employees worth higher wages had it not been illegal for them to be employed at lower wage rates?

Minimum wage as it currently exists is an obstacle to entering the workforce.

Housing is only unaffordable where you are looking.

You can buy a 2500sf house in Aliceville or Eutaw Alabama for about $40,000.

These are small rural towns with not a lot to do but many people like that. I have friends who live there and would hate living in a city the size of Birmingham.

225life is a spoiled little bitch who is sad he cant afford to live where he wants. What he needs to do is work hard and save his money until he can buy what he wants. But he wants to take the lazy route and get someone else to provide for him

225life... go back to DU where you belong.

So you propose a Constitutional amendment to not raise rent?

I can think of about a billion things that we could pass an amendment for that would improve society more (technically this would harm society (look at what rent control has done in NYC) so everything that has a "no change" or better effect on society would be superior to your idea).

For starters, who as a landlord can afford to eat the costs? Big corporations (BlackRock, for example) and the government. A guy who has invested in a couple of apartment buildings cannot just keep prices down because you're sad that it's cutting into your clubbing budget, nor should he be forced to. Your idea would lead to monopolization of housing. Also, if there were a market for cheaper housing, someone would have done it. Lots of businesses do quite well catering to the cheap and the poor. Dollar Tree is wildly successful.

The laws of economics are as immutable as the laws of physics. You cannot legislate them away.

You said part of it should be free. You think the difference between "affordable" and "market value" should be borne by someone other than the person who could just move to a place with more affordable housing.
