Most affordable replacement for Xterra/Frontier?

210k miles on my X and want to replace it next year. I don’t put but maybe 500 miles a year on it, but if I had a new vehicle I’d do more road trips instead of flying/renting. Looked at new frontiers this weekend but had total sticker shock. Want to purchase something before everything goes elec/hybrid. Recommendations?

For cheap light truck use the Maverick isn't bad at all. It's cheap and decently made.
I wish Toyota and Nissan would still sell base line made size trucks. Like the Hilux here.
For a small suv that's all over the place. The Xterra is on a truck frame and there aren't any suitable replacements without going up to 4runner or Wrangler.
Unless you are fine with a small crossover like a Rav4 or Escape.

Check out the GMC Canyon. Pretty good value for the money.

I've seen a few Ford Rangers out in the wild. They look great with some mods.

Everything will give you sticker shock today.
The Frontier is a good choice if you want a truck, but I'd also look at the 2022 Tacoma and 2022 Colorado - both have been out so long that most of the kinks are worked out.
The 4Runner is the only option if you want a mid sized body on frame SUV that can be taken off road. You could get a Wrangler 4door, but that's going to suck on the highway.

Good option if he can find a 2022 model still around. Get the diesel or the V6 gas. Skip the 4 cylinder.
The 2023 models are a new design, so they'll be much more expensive.

I'd wait until next year if at all possible. Some of the supply chain woes on the vehicle market are supposed to ease some. It is insane what some of these mid sized trucks are selling for now. I paid less for my full sized crew cab 6 years ago.

You could just rent when you need one. Even though you only put 500 miles a year you will need insurance.

Not sure what your price range is...but this is what I'd look at:
Nissan Frontier
Chevy Colorado
GMC Canyon
All of them are going ride better and have better tech than your old Xterra. The Frontier is a little newer design, so they are going to charge more for it. The Chevy and GMC are in the last year of their current design, so there will be fewer configuration options but better pricing.

Look into a Subaru Forester or Outback. You will get lots of hippie/lesbian jokes from your friends. However they are very capable offroad and reliable.

The Maverick is a very good compact pickup, especially if you can find one without a bunch of options. But it's not a "truck" technically. It's on the Ford Focus/Escape unit-body platform. It does not have a frame under it like trucks do. And I'd wait a couple of years for the verdict on its reliability. The Escape, Focus, and Bronco Sport are on the same chassis and they have had a lot of problems and recalls.
It's built very similarly to the Honda Ridgeline and Hyundai Santa Cruz. Both of them are under-appreciated IMO.
The Santa Cruz starts around $26,000
The Ridgeline starts around $38,000

You can get a base model Outback for under $30k. That's a damn good buy.
And yeah, the lesbian jokes will be everywhere. But the Outback is a very sturdy vehicle and can handle minor towing and light off roading without issue. It rides much smoother than the Frontier, Colorado, Tacoma, etc.

Is this just a road trip vehicle or are you looking to go off road? If just a road trip vehicle we just bought my daughter a Hyundai Santa Cruz and she loves it. Smooth drive and sits off the ground a decent amount. Reminds of the old Explorer Sport Trac. Probably drive a 2022 off the lot for 28 or 29K.

Before you buy any mid-size truck see if you can rent one and take it on a road trip to see how comfy it is. I had a Tacoma in the past and it was one of the 2 negatives against it....comfort sucked.

500 miles a year? You are throwing money away buying a new vehicle for that.

What year? I have about 175,000 on my 2003 manual transmission Xterra. Still love it...

Wife bought a Honda CRV this past spring to replace her old Frontier which had nearly 190,000 on it. I enjoy driving it, but it drives like a sofa/car and not my Xterra.
And yeah, much the same reason. Didn't like taking either of the older vehicles long distances.

How much space do you need?
Check out the Chevy Trailblazer, Subaru Cross Trek, or Hyundai Tuscon.
The Trailblazer and Cross Trek are in the low $20,000 range. The Tuscon is a little bigger, and cost closer to $30,000.

If you can wait, Hyuandai is about to drop this frame on body gem, the Terracan.

I pay insurance plus about 70 a month to keep it at the airport. Problem with renting is that during the summer it’s hard to find rental cars available.
