Oh, wow. Zion has to weigh-in during the season and keep the sum of his weight and body fat percentage under 295

so essentially he needs to maintain weight below 280 to be safe.

I read the article and I still am not sure what this sentence means. They add them together?
So he weighs 275 and he is at 21%, he is over? Is that what they mean? So he can be 280 at 10% and be ok?

Chadboi, if you think he's 15% bf at 280 I've got a 504 number in Covington to sell ya.

Doesn’t really seem like rocket surgery to me

Yeah, he needs to be 270 ish to stay safe. That isn't unrealistic for an athlete.
30% body fat on his frame isn't going to look as fat as your average man with 30% body fat.

I hope Clark's sources are good on this or could be another embarrassment.

enlighten me what you think his bf% is at this time then?

Holy Crap, so if he is 290, he has to be 4% body fat.
I could dig that honestly lol.
But more realistically, he can kind of hover around 280-285 and 9-12% body fat.

He said in an interview earlier this off-season he ideally wants to be at 265 for his playing weight next season, but they don’t believe that is realistic so they are aiming for 270, but he will do everything he can to hit his 265 goal.

Yeah, I think a decent goal for him is to weigh 260-270ish and have a body fat percentage in the teens.
ETA: clearly he wouldn't agree to something that he didn't think was likely, so he has to be in good shape right now

Let’s tie a bow on this contract and dig into what it means.
Zion literally chose to sign a 5 year contract with no player option, injury protection clauses, and weight clauses.
To me, and to us as a fanbase, that should illustrate how much he wants to play in New Orleans and with the Pelicans.
Because he could’ve just as easily said F that, to 1 out of those 3 contract aspects or even all 3 and demanded a trade. And we probably would’ve shipped him off to Brooklyn for KD.

Did y’all see the Barkley interview where he said Moses Malone told him he was fat and needed to get in shape, then as he went from 3 bills down to 240s he started to get to play then played better and better? I think that is the Zion archetype…if he is in shape then he is an athletic wrecking ball.

To give an idea on the 15% and 280lbs numbers, here’s a little perspective:
They measure body fat % at the draft combine (for those that get measured). In the last ten years, only 5 players have had a body fat percentage of 15% or higher. Only 2 have failed the “The sum of his weight and body fat percentage must be below 295” criteria, including Kofi Cockburn this year (293, 9% bf). I know that Zion is unlike any other player, but this is a completely reasonable ask.

This is great in all, but since it says his guaranteed money would decrease, that would only happen if we cut him, if I'm understanding correctly. Which isn't going to happen. I still like it, but I don't see it mattering if he's over a combined 295 at any point.

if he's over 295 then we're fricked anyway

I actually think that the weight clause is a "Cortez burning his ships" moment for Zion, and that Zion probably was ultimately happy that this clause was in the contract.
Zion wants to be MVP. He wants to lead the Pelicans to a title. But to do those things, he needs to be in perfect physical condition. Getting in what Stan Van Gundy euphemistically called "point guard shape" isn't easy for Zion. Now, when he reaches for that bag of Doritos, he has the added awareness that those Doritos could cost him millions of dollars. The weight clause in the contract just adds to his motivation to be truly great; it helps him become the best that he can be.

Hence how I derived my number estimate
