I basically had a doctor tell me something similar when I asked about my cost for a procedure, "I don't know, but we're talking about your health, here." was his response.
gubment and insurance companies have fricked up health care in this country beyond belief

People say this like it's some kind of mantra, but how does that work?
Health insurance was originally to boost revenue for hospitals. However participation was low. Then the government froze wages, and health insurance was added as a benefit.
Government regulation is normally the reason we end up with shitty options.

How come my dog's vet can rebuild a torn ACL for 5 grand, but mine costs 50?

My son just had a brain tumor removed. Billing to the Insurance company so far is up to 275k. So far. If I even have to pay 10% of that, which is highly unlikely, it's totally worth it.

My out of pocket for my cancer treatment has been extremely low, very grateful.

About the best thing medical insurance can do is keep you from going into bankruptcy if you have a major medical event. Back in 2016 when I had my open heart surgeries (2 in one week) I was in the hospital for 31 days. The total submitted to Blue Cross from doctors, surgeons, and the hospital hit seven figures. My out of pocket cost though was $1,500.
Without medical coverage, I’d have been in a sea of debt I’d have no hope of ever getting out.

I’m the sucker that’s paying for all these other people to walk into the emergency room and pay nothing.
then just leave your ID at home and go to emergency room and say your name is juan gomez and you are illegal

Because if you need emergency open heart surgery to the tune of a couple hundred thousand bucks, you'll be glad to only be on the hook for about 20%... 10% if you work for the state or have a Cadillac plan.
True. It only cost me @ 7k.
$1.4M cost me $3,400

Value based pricing…You probably wouldn’t pay 50 grand to have your dog’s ACL rebuilt

I had a medivac to Seattle, 110k and didn't pay a penny on it.

Because government is involved in human healthcare but not animal healthcare. The reason ours cost so much more is not only are we paying for our care, we’re also paying for the care of those without insurance and those on Medicare and Medicaid. You see, when someone on government insurance gets medical treatment, the healthcare provider doesn’t bill the government like they do you or I. They bill the government what the government tells them they’ll pay, which is most times below the cost of providing the healthcare. The provider makes up those losses by billing the rest of us more to cover the difference.

TRUMP got rid of that

Yep.
Then it's a simple matter of avoiding all surgeries and major medical treatments for you and your family.
And paying a few hundred for every check up and sick visit. Or just avoid those as well.

I've had limited experience with those but they seem to be commonly and easily written off

The point of medical insurance is to cover your expenses if you require an expensive surgery, become seriously ill/injured, or require a day or more in the hospital for some reason.

I have a job and insurance, and had a baby at Woman's earlier this year. The entire thing--40 wk pregnancy, hospital stay, delivery, etc., was $800
Haha, oh so you think you’re all paid up and finished with billing? Expect all the different groups at Woman’s Hospital to bill you 7 or 8 more times in the next 8 months. They’ll probably even double charge you for a few things.

They insurance company settled for 98k. I guess Airlift Northwest has to make money. They shouldn't, it was a bad diagnosis and the medivac was unnecessary. My experience with the medical profession has been poor.
I got flight insurance for 125/year from the U of Washington (Airlift Northwest) now.

Honestly the smartest question anyone on the OT has asked in a very long time.
I don't have an answer really, but I always thought this was stupid as frick too.

Yes. I have already been over it with Woman's and seen the charges come through my insurer. That was always going to be the out of pocket cost for me absent any complications, which thankfully there were none.
