What’s the point of medical insurance?

Medical insurance has got to be one of the biggest crocks of shite out there. Why am I paying every paycheck for medical insurance only to have to pay again if I need to see a doctor? I’m not one of these free medical insurance for all types, but I’m the sucker that’s paying for all these other people to walk into the emergency room and pay nothing.
Then on top of that nobody can tell me a price up front. It’s all a guess, what ridiculous amount will the doctor bill my insurance and what amount will my insurance be willing to pay for?
Yeah, I know dear Facebook

You can always decline coverage. Opt out.

The point of medical insurance is ti make money for the company that sells it, just like any other product for sale.

Then you have to pay a penalty in your taxes

Because if you need emergency open heart surgery to the tune of a couple hundred thousand bucks, you'll be glad to only be on the hook for about 20%... 10% if you work for the state or have a Cadillac plan.

Go have any surgery without insurance. Any surgery.
Just go ahead.
Just go ahead.

Good point. You should cancel your health insurance and just go without.

It is risk/cost pooling. Nothing more, nothing less.
Nothing is free.

They get billed, ultimately, unless they have Medicaid. The industry is adapting to discourage them from using the E/R as their PCP. But, ultimately the taxpayer does, largely, pay for this practice.

It's also cause medical expenses to sky rocket in this country. Costs for the medical procedures here vs the rest of the world is like 10 times as much.

This is what grinds my gears, you have to have the procedure to know how much it will cost. What other market offers goods and services where the prices for which are unknown until you commit to the purchase?
It's worse than buying a car. At least then there's a cheeseball I can negotiate with and walk away from the deal if I don't like it.

As someone that has already met max out-of-pocket costs for the year, I can assure you, there's always much more that medical expenses can cost you. I know between premiums, co-pays, etc. it averages around $30k/year for a family plan, but I would have paid quadruple that if out of my own pocket. It's stupid expensive thanks to Uncle Sam, but still glad someone else is helping me pay my family's medical bills this year.

Paying monthly only to then have the privilege to pay out of pocket for your deductible
What a great scheme they have concocted

You will be amazed at the discount doctors will give for people who pay cash up front for their services

Well let’s see… I’ve had 19 operations and my total cost is near 700,000. Glad as hell I had it….

Let someone in your family get cancer and let's talk.

I had a brain tumor removed in 2014.
Bill was- $388,000
I paid $4000 out of pocket.
I think I'll keep paying for my insurance
