I think your fundamental question is about medical costs and transparency.

Some “ifs” that would drive more efficiency for all parts of medical value chain:

If…

System encouraged more shopping around and ownership by consumers

Medical services were available via “Amazon” like platform, including price transparency, services offered, appointment availability timeline, customer feedback, etc, this would drive more competitiveness and transparency and encourage greater efficiency / lower prices.

If you don’t want it then go without it. Could pay off for you. I personally will not take on that risk.

Yeah guys, I get that it’s better than dying. It’s frustrating though that this is the best option we have in America

I pay $1500 a month for a blue cross policy and still have co-pays and deductibles I feel your pain. It’s beyond ridiculous. Health insurance should not be tied to employment and rates not tied to company size. It should be able to be shopped around like car insurance and purchased outside of employment for reasonable rates.

Then on top of that nobody can tell me a price up front. It’s all a guess, what ridiculous amount will the doctor bill my insurance and what amount will my insurance will be willing to pay for?

We need less gov't and more free market in medicine.

Most of what you say is correct.

I just hope you never need to make a trip to the ER yourself, or come down with something that requires hospitalization, or something that requires surgery - like a kidney stone removal or a hernia or having a baby.

Of course, if you are willing to take the risk of these minor things - or god forbid something major like cancer that can strike at any age and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, sometimes just to buy yourself 5 or 10 more years - then by all means decline health insurance and pay the Obama fine (TAX).

Sucks that there is such a fine (TAX), but if you care to hear my advise (for whatever it's worth) - health insurance is worth having. If you're young and don't have a family, find the highest deductible policy you can get with the lowest possible premiums and get it.

There are plenty people every day who go have a baby at Woman’s Hospital and it does not cost them a dime. Meanwhile everybody else who has a decent job and insurance is paying $5000-$10,000 per baby

Well your cost would be way more, but really insurance for healthcare is dumb.

Think of anything else you insure, you’re car, your house, your business.

It’s not for maintenance it for disaster.

Insurance companies make money by charging everyone more in premiums than they pay out. So to make a profit they need people not to use their health insurance as much to make up for the sick.

I have a job and insurance, and had a baby at Woman's earlier this year. The entire thing--40 wk pregnancy, hospital stay, delivery, etc., was $800.

True. It only cost me @ 7k.

On a side note, My dad was 83 the first time he was in the hospital as a patient. Never a broken bone or stiches. Had a GI bleed that stopped on it's own, so still no surgery.
He has Dr. visits/checkups, and will be 86 tomorrow.

You will be amazed at the discount doctors will give for people who pay cash up front for their services

Hospitals will also deal.

That is what your insurance company and hospital want you to think.

In actuality, it probably cost them a tenth of the cost at the negotiated rate.

Just think if we taxed medical procedures at regular tax rates at the billed prices.

State, local, and federal governments would be rolling in the dough.

I like how I pay the $86 bill and then six months later receive four more bills for $2.13, $6.87...

Another case of the industry reacting to government stupidity. 1942 Stabilization Act in particular.

Government froze wages to slow inflation during wartime.

People say this like it's some kind of mantra, but how does that work? What's the demand for good health? If I'm being wheeled into an OR with a burst appendix, what's my negotiating power?
"Hey, Doc, how much is this going to cost me?"
"Well, how much have you got?"

I basically had a doctor tell me something similar when I asked about my cost for a procedure, "I don't know, but we're talking about your health, here." was his response.

And someone was just complaining about how doctors don't abide by the Hippocratic Oath anymore as they're too busy chasing profits. I'm not sure I'm on board with more of that type of thing.
