Going to the coast this weekend on an in-law trout trip. I have never fished with these guys before and just found out they are shrimp throwers. Can I catch anything with artificial whilst in this boat?

yes but it wont be easy as you will be anchored in one spot while fishing.

best to go with the flow and use the same gear but keep one pole ready with artificial to make a few casts every now and then and you can catch whatever comes by the boat

Just bring some Matrix shads or some other plastic that you like. I'm sure they won't care.

They've been smashing them on double rig Matrix shads.

I've been doing just as well on plastics as others on shrimp. Fished with my dad and he used shrimp I used mostly matrix. About even amounts of fish. Used K-dub rig and jighead on baitcaster.

This NWLA guy doesn't understand this term, is it frowned upon to use shrimp for spec fishing? That's what all the guides use that I hire down there.

Some people feel cooler saying they don’t use live bait. Or crossbows

Absolutely, it takes a much better fisherman to pop a cork that has a matrix shad under it vs a shrimp. Way more sporty to run plastic gear.

Not at all. It's just not something I enjoy doing. Not unlike shiners for perch. I just would rather not do it.

Its just frowned upon to pay 50 cents a piece for shrimp, use them to catch a box of 12.00000" trout, and then talk shite about how great a fishermen you are.

Gotcha, Hell, I'm not a great fisherman by any stretch and don't get down there as often as I'd like but when I do I'm always wearing my team ziploc tour fishing shirt

When I lived on the coast I transitioned to artificial, not to be cool, but because then you don't have to worry about bait (buying, finding and/or catching, keeping alive, keeping fresh, rebaiting constantly) and also shrimp gets nibbled away by bait stealers constantly, but the artificial doesn't.

Nailed.

Been happening since the cavemen. The old fisherman lies used to be a fun game. Obnoxiously bragging is off putting though no matter what is tied on the end of the line.

No need for shrimp around here lately and way less catfish without it.

Those are all great reasons to not get live bait, especially if you live on the coast and you get to fish a lot. But if you’re a guy from Baton Rouge or Brookhaven or something towing your boat down in June, I think it’s foolish to not get some live bait. It’s easy to say “I only fish with plastics” but when you tow your bay boat down and you finally get nice enough weather to get to the barrier islands, do you really wanna be out there watching people with shrimp pull 20” trout in and you can’t get a bite?

I fully believe there are some situations where plastics out fish live, but there’s a reason that guys doing it for a living keep live bait on the boat. It can be the difference in 10 and 110 some days.

I don’t understand the divide in inshore fishing. It must have something to do with the effort to get to the fish. People would shite all over a guy catching 8 pound bass with live bait in a flat boat. But those same people would call a guy an idiot for going 50 miles offshore to fish without live bait. If you put a lot of effort into your trip, I think it’s worth it to have some even if it’s just an insurance policy. You absolutely don’t have to have them but you’re taking a risk that you don’t have what they want on your boat.

I agree with you completely. When I lived there, I fished multiple times a week, and bait was a hassle, and I knew all the spots and patterns and all that, because I was a local, and it's much easier to just run with artificial and have the same success. Now that I'm just a visitor to coastlines, I absolutely bait up when I go on vacation.

It's because a four year old can catch trout with a shrimp under a popping cork, and the guide wants to make sure that the 50 year old man who thinks he can fish but really can't goes home with some fish.

If you know what you are doing, you will catch more trout with plastics. But to know what you are doing takes practice. So yeah, guides bring shrimp because 95% of their customers have no idea what they are doing.

The exception is when you're fishing to win a tournament and you turn into a croaker soaker.

Get some Berkley Rattle Shrimp in Coastal Candy Color. Loop knot, fish under an Oval Cork (they move through the water) Shrimp goes up when you pop the cork and when it falls back down that's when you get hit.

You most certainly can. My son and I went out of Crystal River Fl a couple of months ago. He got bored with soaking shrimp under a cork, picked up an artificial and had no problem catching nice trout while the rest of us soaked shrimp and drank beer.
