Maybe not the best westerns currently, but if you search the web for '12 westerns in 12 months' there is at least one fellow who has kicked out quite a few.

Cost is a major factor.

They are pretty expensive to make and they arent guaranteed to hit at the box office. Plenty of realy good westerns have died at the box office even though they have everything going for it.

A lot of the spaghetti westerns were all time great movies but they were also cheap to make. You cant just go over to Italy any more and it cost half as much to make.

Edit: It's possibly my favorite genre as well, but they are making a bit of a comeback with TV series'.

Killing natives on screen is a hate crime

Just make the film in South Dakota or Montana as old blue laws still remain on the books.

quote:

In South Dakota, if there are 5 or more Native Americans on your property, they can be considered to constitute a “raiding party” and you are in fact permitted to shoot them.

quote:

In Montana, any group of 7 or more Native Americans who appear together anywhere in a public place can be considered to be a raiding party and can be arrested or shot (referred to with the term “Indians” in the law.)

Doubt enforceable and probably not the outcome you were hoping for.

Indians & Mexicans can't be portrayed as villains anymore in Hollywood. You also can't team up your lead with them without your lead being a white savior. So there goes half of your genre.

You are left with Lawmen vs Outlaws ...or Anti-hero Outlaws vs Corrupt Lawmen storylines.

Well, you had Dances with Wolves, which definitely didn't portray Indians in a negative light, and you had the Young Guns movies, which worked in the "Anti-Hero Outlaws" part. Tombstone had the Lawmen vs Outlaws and did it superbly.

I honestly think you can do it. The key is, obviously, good writing and staying true to the aesthetic, with a unique story. Definitely avoid retelling the Wyatt Earp story - it's been done to perfection with Tombstone.

Nah, that's why I said you couldn't even team up your lead character with the Indians. Twitter SJW trolls and Rotten Tomato critics would demonize Costner as a white savior because the Indians needed help against the invading colonizers/cavalry, and every entertainment outlet would parrot the minimal backlash as if the whole country were sky-screaming. That Oscar-winning movie wouldn't even be made today, either out of fear of controversy or bc of blind nonsensical virtue signalling.

But we both agree Young Guns (anti-hero) & Tombstone (brave lawmen) type movies could still be made, depending on a unique/fresh script. My point to the OP was the story options were limited now for movie-makers considering filming a western since the villain pool was cut in half, which is part of the reason for the relative scarcity of new westerns.

Should not be considered a Western. It was just a time-period piece of crap.

How about Neo-Westerns? Wind River and Hell or High Water are a couple of my recent favorites.
