re: What moron decided that Tulane should leave the SEC in 1966?

quote:I remember some of the talk that was around when TU dropped its SEC affiliation. It was both academic and competition reasons that drove the change. The "Harvard of the South" thing was part of it; the egghead professor elites wanted Tulane to be a more refined, Ivy League kind of place. The other issue was that they weren't spending the $$ necessary to keep up with hated rivals LSU and Ole Miss, and weren't experiencing the kind of gridiron success in the late 1950s/'60s that had made the Tulane brand prominent once upon a time. Also there was the factor of the stadium; when they later moved to the Superdome, the venue changed and the campus was no longer the center for Green Wave fans. I think this was (and remains) a big problem for the Tulane fanbase. The old Sugar Bowl stadium on campus was a great place to play and watch football - but parking there was a nightmare.
Tulane's move was purely academic I would imagine since most schools and programs in the south were a lot different academic wise than tulane strived to be.

I always casually rooted for Tulane growing up as it was a Louisiana school (I'm from Louisiana). But the Tulane students that were relocated to A&M Fall of 05 because of Katrina were largely assholes
Students donated meal plans, we gave them a home basketball game against us, sold their merchandise in the gift shops, etc. And they really seemed ungrateful and snobbish. News flash Tulane, A&M is just as good academically as you are. Get over yourself.
The other N.O, university students were much nicer

eta: Texas A&M is clearly a great school and obviously a superior choice for engineering. No offense meant by that lol bro. I know how some of the smug, arrogant Tulanians can be.

To no one in particular: I took my daughter on a visit to Tulane when she was looking at colleges. I can tell you that the coed who led our campus tour had a seething hatred of LSU and let it be known verbally.

No, offense taken. It was 6 years ago. I still root for Tulane. And A&M and Tulane are both excellent schools in their own ways. We are very highly regarded in Ag, engineering, vet science and business especially. We don't have a law school and a lot of people don't realize that we do have a med school.

Nah, timlan would have terrible grammar and be throwing out "toolame" and "weenies" repeatedly in every post.

I always root for LSU to beat the crap out of Tulane, but I don't want their football program to go away. I actually would like them to be the second best program in the state, but always beaten by LSU. I still wish we played them every year. I enjoyed the Tulane games.

I think the t-shirt fan is A&M thing only a lot of people went to in-state school other than LSU and are still die hard fans.
This. In Kentucky, anyone that goes to WKU, EKU, Murray State, Morehead State, etc, are either UK or Louisville fans first and foremost. I'd even say 30% of Louisville's student body are UK fans that are from Louisville and didn't want to go away to school.

It is amazing how many lsu fans there are that never stepped foot in a classroom there..
There is a tee shirt going around lafayette that reads:
"If you are wearing an ull shirt, chances are you went there .... if you are wearing a lsu shirt, chances are that you went to walmart"

Sidewalk fans are part of what makes great programs great. I don't see why anyone has a problem with them.

A small hijack. USC left the ACC in 1971. That ranks along with Tulane.

It may have been dumb at the time (and for several years following), but they're in better shape now than they would have been had they stayed.

Not sure if serious.

Very serious...in hindsight, it was a terrible move. How is Vandy able to survive the SEC? How does Northwestern survive the Big Ten, or Stanford survive the PAC-12?
How much money and exposure did Tulane lose by leaving the SEC?

Good question. Vandy is comparable to Tulane up until 1966. And Vandy hasn't finished in the AP poll since 1948. They have 4 winning seasons since 1959.

Both those schools can find their way to the Rose Bowl now and again. And Northwestern and Stanford are in huge metros so that is a big plus for their respective conferences. Odds of Vandy ever making it to the Sugar Bowl? Negative. I honestly think the SEC hasn't run Vandy off simply because they boost our academic standing.
Long story short, Vandy has profited financially as you say. But could Tulane have predicted that in 1966, long before cable TV and ESPN would revolutionize the TV market? It was a very different world then.

Wouldn't it have made more sense for Georgia Tech to remain in the SEC than either Tulane or Vandy?
They were fairly competitive in the 50s and 60s under Bobby Dodd.

The lol really wasn't meant to mean anything negative, which is why I edited. I just thought it was funny because I remember how douche-like some of those kids were being after Katrina. Like they were entitled to go to Harvard and Wharton for free for a semester or it just wasn't worth going to any school. I should have quoted his entire post, then it would have made more sense instead of looking like a dig at A&M
