Interesting article. I wasn't aware of the large support for Missouri to join the SEC. Does this say more about their displeasure with UT and the Big 12, or do they really want to be part of the SEC? It doesn't sound like the B1G wants them, so the SEC is their only big time option, outside of staying put.

I think the fans want the SEC, but the administration, particularly on the academic side, would want the B1G. The question for them is if a B1G offer would ever come? If they want to hold out for hope, then they would stay with the Big 12, but they can't sign on to the media rights to the Big 12 for 6 years. Would the Big 12 let them stay without signing on? If they were key to keeping the Big 12 together, maybe. But while I think the Big 12 really wants them, I don't think they are necessary and if you let one not sign, then there would be others and you defeat the purpose.

I think the SEC is their only safe harbor in the near term. If the B1G expands, they will look at ND (a possibility with the BE imploding), and the east coast first. MO might not be looked at until they need a 16th, and who knows when that might be.

the SEC is for the SEC blooded. no middle ground

A&M was waiting 20 years for this. We bleed 'school fanatism.' We're 'school crazy.'

Time for Mizzou to define who they are. No middle ground.

When I was in Columbia recently every Mizzou fan I met wanted a move to the SEC. They did admit, however, that they would be a bottom dweller for a while.

You sound upset about your offense. I don't blame you, I'd be embarrassed too if my team played like that at #1.

If they're not sold on the SEC, they could always go indy to keep from signing their lives away to the Bevo 9. BiG invite might come eventually.

What I posted in another thread follows.

From what I can tell Mizzou fans want the SEC badly - even moreso than some of them want the B1G. The reservations of most anti-SEC Mizzou fans is football competition. One problem is the St. Louis Post-Dispatch which for some reason thinks the city is in the eastern U.S. Other problems are the Kansas City Star and the president of Missouri's board of curators, Warren Erdman, who lives in Kansas City. Erdman is not looking out for the best interests of Mizzou. He and the Star are more concerned with the economic impact Kansas City would suffer by losing the Big 12 basketball tournament.

All indications are that the Missouri governor is onboard for the SEC and he appointed five of the current seven curators.

I drank beer with a Mizzou alum this afternoon who told me something very interesting. He said that according to someone who I'd characterize as a rock solid source the Mizzou chancellor and AD are willing to dump the entire decision into the laps of their curators and let them make the decision one way or another. The Missouri curators meet on Tuesday.

So, my feeling is no. Mizzou is not stringing us along. But this is not something that happens with the snap of someone's fingers. It takes time.

What do I think Mizzou will do? I honestly do not know. What I can tell you is that if my information is correct and their curators act according to the wishes of the vast majority of Mizzou fans and what is best for their school then Mizzou will be applying for membership in the SEC very soon.
