Why is Lane Kiffin considered to be such a homerun hire as an OC?

He does really well with sub-par talent at Bama

Because he's done a good job at Bama. Made the playoffs three years running with three different QBs. He even made Jonathan Crompton serviceable in his one year as HC at Tennessee.

He's done some good things at Bama, but really he's just tweaked the bama system a bit to modernize it.

Everyone is also really impressed with the final scores on paper forgetting a few things 1) many have been padded by non offensive TDs 2) the SEC is really lousy this year.

oh he's a really good OC. he has major issues at HC but he's a top-tier OC

the pro-O crowd will act like we just crippled Bama (even though they're likely not retaining him anyway)

Well, hopefully he could do that here.

At the same time, I feel like a lot of people on this board were saying "the only way I'd be remotely close to okay with an Orgeron hire is if Kiffin comes with him."

Obviously, it still sucks that we hired Orgeron. However, I feel like a lot of the same people who were saying Kiffin would be a great hire are now shitting on him, just because they are pissed that Orgeron is our coach.

Because Bama owns LSU and people think that anything from Bama is automatically good. What they don't realize is that in good programs, like Bama, everything flows through the head coach. LSU now had a defensive line coach in that position.

The guy is an idiot off the field and can't stand him for that reason.. however, he's a damn good coach and that's what we need on offense. Let's face it, he'd only be here a max of 2-3 years. If he gets us winning championships or at least contending, it will boost our program a hell of a lot more than it is now and that's a good thing. He would be an offensive transition coach for us, that's all.

i'm not shitting on kiffin

i think long-term it's super risky but it's basically mandatory for O at this point

assuming we get kiffin, LSU is basically going to have 3 HCs on staff. it's going to be interesting

ETA: only negative I see is Saban knows his playbook and style.

He'd be a good OC I think but honestly he's more qualified to be head coach than Orgeron is.

I really thought Steve Ensminger did a great job as an interim OC. He ran a balanced offense, used more imagination and more spread concepts than before, and simplified the offense for Etling. I'm not saying he should be considered for the full-time OC position, but I have a hard time imagining Kiffin would lead to a drastic offensive improvement.

One area where LSU has struggled over the past few years is QB development. Based off what little I know about Kiffin, it seems like that's the area he could make the biggest impact.

I love how everyone just assumes that bama wouldn't match any offer LSU extends to kiffin. assuming that LSU will just coach poach from alabama is hilarious.

absolutely. He had been the OC on multiple championship teams at two different programs.

OC for USC and Bama for national championships but we wonder if he's "top tier" or not.

Kiffin is the only coordinator/asst coach that I've personally seen overrule Saban during a game. That tells me something.

This season bama was going for it on fourth down. Saban didn't like what he saw and wanted to talk about it so he started running towards the official to call a time out. Kiffin reached out and held Saban back. Saban stopped in his tracks. The play called was run and Bama made the first down. Enough said...

A video of what I'm referring to...

I don't. I believe there are quite a few OCs who could do a world of good here.
