Going 10-2 every year in the American is not that impressive.

Charlie Strong or James Franklin are good up and coming coaches, but Saban is in a class by himself. We won't see someone like him for a long time.

Part of it is that the media has to get on board and attach a label to a guy as the most dominant coach. Not to say Saban isn't worthy on his own, but he was a great, perhaps not legendary coach before obtaining that reputation, which helped to really make him untouchable.

If that happens and the guy gets in the right situation, I can see someone else rising up. I doubt they'll match Saban, but you might get a guy that is head and shoulders above the other strong coaches.

I'd argue for:

1C. ) David Shaw

11-2, 12-2, 11-2 at freaking Stanford. You know, the nerd school. Offensive Coordinator when Luck was there.

FWIW

Saban was not a hot commodity when LSU hired him and the fans feelings at LSU in 2000 were pretty tepid after he dropped that game to UAB.

Obviously it turned out to be an absolute home run hire but looking back at Saban as the guy who lost the heads up bowl game to Gerry Dinardo's LSU team and wasn't dominant at Michigan State makes the point of how hard it can be to tell who will be great at their next job and who won't.

I don't know if anyone meets that category. Saban is a top 1 or 2 college coach of all time. There isn't always another great waiting in the wings.

Saban wasn't really up and coming. He really wasn't even on LSU's radar, Sexton initiated contact. In fact, I know several folks who were kind of turned off by the hire and called him a dog-cussing hothead that wouldn't really fit.

Because there are no dog-cussing hotheads in Louisiana?

I was thrilled when LSU hired Saban. I followed him a bit while he was at MSU, and you could tell he was developing into a stud head coach. At the time he was at MSU, Michigan was very strong under Carr, Notre Dame had a ton of great players at the end of Holtz's tenure, and Ohio State was very talented as well.

Despite having far less talent, he was finding ways to beat those teams when those teams were all top 25 caliber.
