Please pardon my ignorance because I really don't know much about the topic. But I didn't really hear much about forming a shadow staff til Bama hired Kiffin a while back and now Sark. Can you have as many of these guys as you want? Also can they recruit for you or is that a violation? Anybody that knows TIA!

No recruiting, no coaching players, and no onfield participation during practice or game days as far as pertinent decision making goes.

They watch and chart plays, which depending on the analyst, can see more than the run of the mill staff member.

they are basically consultants. I think coach O could use them, esp with regards to the offense and game planning. let's face it, our game plan against teams with a good front 7 stinks.

And they can do it all year long...scouting opponents and finding tendencies for every game you will play. Since his 'analysts' include past head coaches and a handful of legendary coaches...they can also make suggestions.

It's a huge advantage, and he's pioneered the use of them. Any team that wants to consistently compete with Bama will have to invest in the same or you're fighting an even steeper uphill battle than facing Saban without the shadow staff.

We need to hire a great DL recruiter and upcoming coach, and hire Jenkins to our shadow staff.

Is Mike Locksley just a consultant? I was surprised seeing him on the sideline wearing a headset talking to the qb's.

No clue who he was, Google says he's a consultant. Probably shouldn't be on the field coaching, but Bama.......

They have a ton of them ...for instance Bama's OL coach is a former Asst. HC and recruiting coord. for UCF. In addition to those strong recruiting ties (11 years at UCF)..he was also a Broyles award finalist 3 years in a row.

So they hire this very good up and coming coach, with enormous recruiting ties in FL...and who do they have as an OL "analyst"? Joe Pendry... a legendary NFL OL coach.

LSU should invest in translators, rather than consultants.

Does any program besides Bama actually have a "shadow staff?"

Saban likes a stacked deck. He doesn't cheat outright but he bends the frick out of the rules to his advantage. If the NCAA banned shadow staffs he'd hire a double secret shadow staff until a rule was made against it.
